2 weeks at 3 mechanic shops to figure out that my overheating problem came was a result of bad thermostat and water pump. Weeeeee.
I know precisely JACK about cars and those two were amongst my first guesses. Bad circulation and a thermostat stuck open or closed or destroyed by the lack of circulation.
Good times.

Good to have it sorted at last So simple I could have guessed that at the outset. I've had thermostats and water pump troubles

Thanks so much Mike. My mother has been house bound for 2 weeks now while I've borrowed her car to go to work.
Im glad this is sorted out finally as well. I will go back to the first shop btw in good spirits and good intentions and poke fun at them. 4 guys there scratching their heads wondering "could be it be the Johnson rod what did it? "
I'll tell them it was the clamper flange and watch them all nod their heads.

Right. Even the cab driver who took me out of the 3rd shop was laughing that nobody had replaced the thermostat yet.

I'm thinking about suing the first shop for emotional damages at this point.

The good news for me is that my Mazda sailed through MOT yesterday without any issues. Big relief.
Not so good was they won't investigate the engine issue I reported unless I leave it with them over night so they can start it from cold to try and replicate the problem.

Is there a check engine light Jules? If you really wanted to for $30 you could get an OBD reader. Plug it into the port under the steering wheel and find out what code comes up for the check engine light and Google that code and know for yourself what the problem could be.

All modern cars have a check engine light, coupled with (as you say) fault codes.

Thanks guys and very interesting suggestion Robert. I'm not getting any warning lights on the dash if that's what you mean?

It's worth getting a code reader, Jules, as not all codes will trigger the check engine light.

It's worth getting a code reader, Jules, as not all codes will trigger the check engine light. Plus when your vehicle requires servicing you can tell the mechanic specifically what to address and avoid paying for hours of (mis)diagnosis...

Still have the boss's Saab 9-5
I kerbed it the other day, low profile tyres, flat yesterday Went to Martin's Tyres today. Tyre found to be deformed and old, over 5 years. Showed me a load of black dust inside the tyre. The other was even worse. Great cut, around 8", worn on one edge and also old Two new tyres seemed the only way
Booked in for tracking and toeing on Friday to stop them wearing unevenly Unless I'm being stitched up seems to be the thing to do

I'm surprised your tyres got through an MOT, Mike!

MOT is around 9-10 months old so probably fine then

My tyres last a year so there is no chance of them getting old.
I will need another set before April for the MOT.
