Went car shopping the other day as my girlfriend needs a new car, she took a Lexus RX300 for a drive and fell in love with it, so we are picking it up on Saturday. Ticks all the boxes for her- needs to carry three kids, four dogs and be able to tow a caravan and a horse box. 3 litre V6 so plenty poke for towing. It's not particularly fast but is very quiet and refined. Nice growl when booted though, which I've missed since I had my Alfa. Bombproof Lexus build quality too which is always a plus. MPG isn't exactly stellar but it will be used almost exclusively for local journeys.

A work colleague picked up one of those Lexuses (Lexi?) and reported similarly: very comfortable, disappointing economy.

She only drives a couple of miles to work, and it's about a mile to the farm where her daughters' horse is stabled- that's almost all of the journeys it'll do.

So, to make an electric car sound like it has an engine, we need a world-renowned film score composer?
Hammer/nut anyone?

But just imagine... The rise in tempo as the car starts to move. The relaxing motif as you cruise the motorway and the dramatic change when some idiot pulls in front of you. Then there's the eerie, dissonnant bit when you can't find the right turning and the triamphal finale when you finally pull into Tesco's carpark and switch the engine off!

Only me ?
Near side window stuck. Would not move. Pushed, pulled, checked fuse. All other windows worked. Damn. Must be jammed. Look up how to unjam on YouTube. Useful tips but what a job !
Days later needed to pick up a CD rack. Not far and warm enough so drive there with window one third down all fine.
Tried the switch - you never know - worked - now up. Hooray ! Black magic ? Is it cos I'm unlucky and lucky ?

These updated Ring Inflators are excellent - so much easier to use than the old ones. Worked pretty well on my tyres today too!

Looks like a new (to me) car beckons
What do I want ?
Not sure if I want a small thing as I do so little mileage, another Saab means at least 9 years old, an estate to be able to carry stuff
After replacing the drive belt and both pulleys, getting through the MOT a couple of months back I thought I was set for another 12 months Reverse gear has gone and been diagnosed as internal therefore needing a new gear box, £1000-2000 total at a guess

There are lots of small reliable hatchbacks around, or do you really need an estate?

I'm used to a 6 foot space with the seats down. Would prefer a long space to cart stuff around but not essential. If an estate version of the car selected is the same sort of money as hatchback then preferred.
The Saab delivers a lot of things like that I've taken for granted. Maybe the industry caught up with : Very comfortable seat. Excellent for long distance drives All Saabs have a great deal of safety in an accident Easy to drive with all the control just there, good visibility 2.3 Turbo gives superb acceleration - which I am unlikely to yearn for nowadays 30mpg was good for that sort of motor. Assume much better these days, especially if I drop down in size and engine size I persuaded many to look at Ford Focus - and a few bought one Impressed with how they drove. Bit small maybe or could be my new reality

Focus estate is a good choice. Beware Ford's crap warranty and their tendency for things to break as soon as the warranty expires, though. None of our family will buy one again. Saying that, if you have a good local garage then I think it's a pretty good car.
Honda Civic estate is even better, but hard to find.

I'll always stick with Japanese for cars - we've always done well with reliability to date.
New Honda Civic was good when on test drive. Not exciting, but very competent to drive. Interior a bit uninspiring and disappointing in terms of quality.

Current Porsche garage labour rate £180/hour.
Range Rover £162/hour.
Something needs to be done. I personally think they are just saying if the vehicle is outside of warranty then "fuck off".
Am I wrong?
