When I go out on the bike I don't see many people and I keep to the roads Then you could end up in a ditch, hidden from view, unable to cry out or move but you could reach for the phone. But no it's not there, or worse still not charged because you neglected it's needs and ways..... hehe, I'm just kidding with you. It's a miracle we survived the 50's / 60's / 70's

Oh yes, I get that too. I have to charge it for her as well. She's usually got her Lenovo tablet within reach and is glued to FB / Messenger etc so Messenger and even calling through Messenger is more reliable than her mobile! I keep telling her "It's not a mobile phone if it just stays in one place all the time / not where you are "

I do miss my Windows Phone but Android has fitted in well once I installed the Microsoft Launcher, Edge, Office applications, OneNote, OneDrive etc. It integrates rather well with my Windows machines now. When I worked at Nokia before they went Windows they tested Android OS and had working prototypes. I got my old Windies 640 (budget phone) out the other day and I do still like the presentation of graphics and text. Sounds like you've got a Windows phone there (almost) I have the Onedrive and Excel but not felt the need for more. I saw the Windows launcher had over 10m downloads, so you are not alone..

It's nice, works well and the battery life is good for two days.

Well moved, Martin. I was wondering how I was going to shoe-horn this in without thoroughly derailing the original thread. On the subject of launchers, I auditioned quite a few when I first started using Android devices and the best one I found, and am still using to this day on my phone and tablets is the Nova Launcher PrimeIt's got great flexibility - you can use many purpose-built free and commercial icon sets just as one example. The "transitions" between screens don't cripple the device either. I have mine set as a "rotating cube" style and have different types of app on different pages. Basically, if it's on the screen you can "personalise" it. Customisation really is King. There's a free, cut-down, version to try, and that was good enough to persuade me to purchase the full app. In fact, the "Prime" version acts as a license for the free version. A single purchase allows you to distribute it across as many devices as you own that are registered with the Play Store. Sorry to sound like an advertisement, but I really do like it, and it's still the best I've tried. The last update was Dec 2018 by the way, so it's still being improved and supported. www.androidcentral.com/nova-launcher-may-be-best-thing-ever-happened-android

Martin, have you found the Windows launcher to extend battery life?

Slinger it does look good. However, it's the integration that will keep me using the Microsoft launcher as I can slide to the right and all my browsed sites appear, as well as recent documents edited, from my other Windows 10 devices. A single click and I can carry on from where I left off. speedysteve I can't say I've greatly noticed but it certainly hasn't got worse!

Oh, yes, Martin, it wasn't a suggestion for you. It was only for normal people, who actually enjoy being able to get away from Windows.

Mr. Cheap who barely needs a mobile if at all here.
Assume a second hand Android type phone with minimum or PAYG commitment.
What do you have for me please ?
Reasons Carrying it with me when out on the bike to ring in the unlikely but possible event I need to. Taking the odd pic of odd things out and about Getting me to places I don't know in the car, via Google maps I guess Having it for an increasing amount of places that insist I must give a bloody mobile number
Usage may increase once I know what I can do with it. If it keeps working of course

I got a Google Pixel XL 2nd hand locally on Facebook for sale. One very careful owner. Excellent phone. Battery life is great. Nice BIG bright display. I now favour that over pocket fit. Runs latest Android OS. No own manufacturers take on stuff, pure Android. It's faster opening apps and browsing. OneDrive and Google drive both faultless. There's not much I can't do on it tbh. Camera is miles better, reception in house better than Moto G5 / always works. WiFi is more stable then anything I've had before esp when moving between my two twinned routers.. Fast charger is FAST!
Only paid £120. Had it over three months now. Very pleased. Premium phones are the way to go.

Pick a "brand" that you recognise, Mike. There are tons of supposedly really well specced no-name phones on eBay that are anything but well specced. Work out your budget, add the obligatory 25%, draw up a short-list of what you can afford that looks to have a reasonable camera. Go from there.
If you Google whatever the name of the phone is (e.g. Nokia Lumia 640 LTE) followed by the word "review" the chances are you'll find one if the brand is well-known. Most reviews talk about the quality of a phone's camera.

Never taken my interest No-name is probably best avoided as is Apple that the rest of the posse have and swear by. Turned down 2 or 3 of them in the past. I'd learn specs on the job as I have no idea how much I will use it or what for even. Rarely at most with the chance I'll become like most in time.

I counted out buying a Pixel on eBay or from the refurb sellers.. too many bad reviews for most of them. If you look on Facebook for your local forsale area, you will find load of phones coming up and you can probably cycle over and see what you are buying. What's more you can see a bit of what the seller is like from their Facebook page. Best to avoid drug dealer look-a-likes / ladettes It's the new local ads / better than eBay for things you either want to see first or have to collect anyway. We've sold quite a few things on FB too. Totally free. Bet eBay are p!$$ed off !

The Pixel is a cracking phone, Mike, but beware the condition -
Good Condition : The unit is showing considerable signs of handling, with scuffs and scratches along its back casing and/or screen in patches.
The one on Amazon only comes with a USB lead but not a charger, the eBay item has neither.
When buying used (books mostly) on Amazon I've never dipped lower than VG, and on eBay, I'll never buy used unless they include pics of the actual item they're selling, rather than just stock shots.
One thing you certainly did get right, which I forgot to mention, was that if you want to choose your own network then you'll need an "unlocked" phone.
