It's far too good for you😂 "And you are never to use it till you can prove that you have spent ten minutes of every day in a rational manner using its excellent advanced features." Bonus points if you know where the origins of my modified quotation is from. I believe it's a quote from that marvellous 2016 film, Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies. Yes yes, but the best Mr Bennet will always be Sadly departed RIP.

Ordered - to arrive on Feb 2nd. I'm gambling on the price actually going up on release. Have fun with it Paul. Sometimes we need to buy stuff whether we "need" it or not!

A year ago I got a Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G from iD (Curry's/Three/Carphone Warehouse). The sound quality was the most... unusual I've had from a phone. The bass was the most obvious for it's solidity and sense of texture. Fine. Top end however was really muted. I did try the what'sitthing burn in track a couple of times, which did help, but the balance was still less than ideal. The oddest thing though was the midrange. Decades ago I remember reading reviews where a component was described as having a "lumpy" midrange. I never knew what this meant as it was something I'd never encountered myself. Well, the midrange on the Note 11 Pro sounded just that - lumpy. It was pretty weird. Anyway, luckily after a few weeks it all sorted itself out and it's the best sounding phone I've had so far. I marvel at the sound emanating from the speakers thinking back to that from a pocket radio from the 60s with a speaker about 3" in diameter. Never had much interest in games. When I had a Nokia 5800 I did have a few with my favourite being Mystery Mansion Pinball. Thought the graphics & sound clips a hoot. Really disappointed it wasn't available on Android. Late last year however, found a Java emulator let's you play such games on Android, and I still find it entertaining, more than a typical Android pinball game. You can still download it here: phoneky.co.uk/games/?id=j3j595There's a link to an emulator too, but I got one from Google Play Store which worked better.

I still marvel at how good my Oppo X3 Find Lite is, there is really nothing it can't do.
However, I was reading about the new Samsung S24 Ultra yesterday and found it lustful in every way, including the way it looks. Incredibly pricy, though. Down, boy...

The Oppo is almost three years old now, Martin, that's virtually stone-age tech these days. The successor X4 and X5 don't offer much more and they weren't offered in the lovely metal case that the X3 silver came in. I have Android 13 on it, so it's fully up to date.

I was just having a quick squint at the changelog for Android 14, developer.android.com/about/versions/14/features and this jumped out. Obviously it will depend on the individual manufacturer's implementation, but it might be interesting. On that Note (see what I did there?) my new Note has Dual speakers, Dolby Atmos®, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, 24-bit/192kHz Hi-Res and Hi-Res wireless audio, plus Bluetooth 5.2. I can't see any of those getting an enormous amount of use though. I'm more likely to just install the software to control my Audiolab 6000N. Android 14 also adds support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) images that "retain more of the information from the sensor when taking a photo", which enables vibrant colours and greater contrast. It's worth checking out the " Camera and media" section in the Overview of the link I posted. As I say, it'll obviously depend on the manufacturers, but there's some cool stuff there. Your X3 should get the Android 14 update in Q1 or Q2 of 2024.

Your X3 should get the Android 14 update in Q1 or Q2 of 2024. Thanks. It already has HDR mode, helping the camera to be by far the best I've yet known in a phone, and the Night mode is pretty special, too. I think Oppo's ColorOS, which they build onto Android, adds these special features ahead of them going mainstream in Android.

My new phone was released today, and should, hopefully, arrive tomorrow. At the moment buying early looks like a good decision as Amazon instantly slapped forty quid on the price as soon as it was physically available. Except, two out of the three colours are instantly out of stock, with only "Aurora Purple" being currently available; I've ordered "Ocean Teal".

The beast has nearly landed? Let's get a lengthy report on this one Paul once you've used it. If you've got the stones that is.
My smartphone is 3 years old now Battery life is dwindling significantly. I'll be leasing a new Samsung quite soon.

My smartphone is 3 years old now Battery life is dwindling significantly. I'll be leasing a new Samsung quite soon. Haha. Don't expect too much, I shall mostly be using it as a phone, and a very occasional camera. The majority of its more arcane functions will remain a mystery to me I'm sure. GSM Arena finally dropped their review today, and here's their "Verdict". Pros | Cons | IP54-rated no-nonsense design, nice colors.
| No microSD card slot.
| Bright OLED with razor-thin bezels, 120Hz, Dolby Vision.
| Virtual proximity sensor | Good speakers. | Unimpressive ultrawide and selfie cameras. | Competitive fast charging solution. | Battery life could be better. | Adequate performance, little to no throttling. |
| Excellent main camera performance |

Hope they haven't lost it. 'Delay' is a bit of a euphemism at Amazon for many kinds of mishap.

Hope they haven't lost it. 'Delay' is a bit of a euphemism at Amazon for many kinds of mishap. As I mentioned yesterday, two out of the three colour choices (including mine) were, and are, showing as " Out Of Stock". I was hoping that simply meant that pre-orders had been filled and that there was no more stock, but now it looks like I bought something that Amazon never had in the first place, and is still waiting for. I could get a refund and buy the " Aurora Purple" version, with delivery promised " Tomorrow" but I'll hang on for the colour I actually ordered.

FFS! Still no email from Amazon to tell me when my phone might be arriving, but on the Amazon site they're now offering it with "FREE Prime delivery Friday, 22 March" which is nothing short of pathetic.
It's only just February and this year has already placed itself firmly in the "it's shit" column.
