I told Ruth that the Oppo has a fantastic camera and she's seen the results. She wants to be different, though, and will order a Samsung A54 in Awesome Violet.

I'll be getting a new budget Android phone soon. My phone is falling apart after two recent incidents but somehow refuses to die completely! Does anything take your fancy, Jules? Yes but they are too expensive Front runner is Redmi Note 11 for 160 quid. Should suit my purposes fine ...

A small moan about Samsung.
Ruth has just received her A54 5G phone and I was helping her to set it up last night. Unfortunately, Samsung are one of those brands that go rogue on apps, pre-installing their own versions and not the Google standards. Even worse when they give it the same name, like Contacts. The Samsung app is useless and will not sync her Google account contacts, and then I twigged. Installed the proper Google Contacts and we had sync going in moments. It's the same for others like mail (she's getting Outlook which is pretty much the standard for work/home accounts and is on her old phone).
Worse still, what is with the system defaults? Even the App picker, Home and Back buttons are the wrong way round. And the power button long press doesn't shut down the phone, it calls up Bixby. Why, Samsung? I shall start with installing the Microsoft Launcher for her tonight (also on her old phone) and re-jigging her home screen somewhat.
Great phone, shame about Samsung 'doing an Apple' with their bizarre versions of settings and apps.
(in case you think I'm biased against Samsung, I remind you that I have an S7 FE tablet, which is superb except for the same bizarre defaults that took ages to put right)

Attempt at some market differentiation under a narrow OS remit. Google Pixels are best if you want pure Google..

Surprised and disappointed to hear that Samsung are now playing this game. I'd always assumed that Samsung would give you a 'pure' Android experience.
Forget Apple, there are a number of Chinese mobile phone producers that tinker with Android. My son has a Poco phone that does this but he likes it a lot and much of the bloatware can be disabled.

There is very little additional bloat with my Oppo. It's very close to pure Android.

I'm going to buy the Redmi Note 11 if they ever get it back in stock. Because it has all the features I want I'm willing to accept that they will have taken a few liberties with the OS.

Well this is the "budget" Android thread!
My phone is hanging on by a thread so ordered a Poco M5S in a Mi flash sale today.
£209 down to £149, plus an extra tenner with voucher = £139 delivered.
Spec is great for my needs and has AMOLED screen, headphone jack and dual speakers.

How come you didn't go with the Redmi Note 11 in the end; they're on eBay (new) for £140 - £150?

How come you didn't go with the Redmi Note 11 in the end; they're on eBay (new) for £140 - £150? Because the manufacturer didn't have stock for weeks and I prefer to buy "direct" rather than a 3rd party. Poco is the same company as Redmi of course and they share similar design. The Poco has a marginally better spec on paper than the Redmi.

I now have the new Poco phone. Missed the DPD delivery early this morning but they left it to collect at a shop just 10 mins walk away so all good.
I like the finish on the back of the phone, in a very smooth pearlescent white. It's a fraction taller but slimmer than my old phone, roughly the same weight.
Came with a transparent plastic cover, USB cable but disappointingly no charger. I knew this when buying so ordered the original 33w fast charger cheaply on eBay. Hopefully that will arrive tomorrow.

Ruth's Samsung A54 came with no charger, but it's not a problem. We have a whole bunch of USB-A to USB-C cables and plug chargers at home.

Ruth's Samsung A54 came with no charger, but it's not a problem. We have a whole bunch of USB-A to USB-C cables and plug chargers at home. A long time ago I bought a "cable wallet" which I filled with every (basic) combination of USB leads I could think up. When I use one, I replace it. Simples.

Lol - yes I've got all manner of chargers and cables, what I didn't have is the appropriate fast charger which is much faster than any of my older ones. Innit.
