Damn this is so frustrating. My phone works very well indeed but could do with new battery. Can buy one cheaply from manufacturer but you can't import a phone battery into the UK on its own - needs to be sent inside a phone. Forces me to buy a new mobile ... Since when? Bought a couple last year.

Perhaps it's best just to let it die:

Bought a couple last year. It seems regulations were introduced in 2013 regarding international shipments of certain batteries with domestic regs getting tightened up some time after. There are different rules for different types of batteries of course - www.postoffice.co.uk/mail/what-can-i-send

Yes I know you're not supposed to send them by Royal Mail; magnets, being another. Still,it's how I received mine last year.

Using my budget LG almost properly now. Still having odd things happen, which could me yours truly or my relationship with tech Should have switched to mobile and mobile broadband last year. I even realised I can carry it around with me to answer calls ! - when I remember Can see why developing countries skip fixed phones and go straight to mobile

I got dangerously bored and I've just picked one of these up for eighty quid on eBay. www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_redmi_note_8_pro-9812.phpIt's a fairly old model, and nothing like the high-powered briquettes a lot of you guys have bought, but as 95% of its use will be actually making phone calls, i.e. calling for cabs when I'm out, and bearing in mind I don't go out, it should serve me well, and it's a step up from what I have now. If you don't already know the GSM Arena site, by the way, it's the best one I've found for getting all of the details about a phone.

Agreed, GSM Arena is a mine of useful information on phones.

My Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro turned up this morning, and first impressions are favourable. It's already been updated to Android 11, setting it up was a breeze thanks to Google, which enabled me to transfer everything, including all my apps, from my old phone to my new phone with one, verbal, " Hello Google...," command. My Nova Launcher app works perfectly with Android 11 and the only " manual" task was switching to the alternate set of icons I use. As usual, I've ordered a gel case for the new phone, which is a shame as it came with one of those too.

At least the one I ordered is clear, and the one it came with it is a transparent black case.

I like clear gel cases as they don't make the phone look huge while still protecting it.

There's counter intuitive stuff in Android. Is this for all phones or just low budget, old ones like mine ?
Can't get hold of my phone quick enough to answer as the ring time (was) so short
To change ring time, up to a maximum of 30 seconds (found on Google) Enter **61**101**30#
Surely there must be an easier way for this and other settings ?

The ring time is often determined by your service provider and is also impacted by whether you have voicemail enabled and how many rings to allow before answering.
Not a function of the phone, as such.

Will check out voicemail bits

I bought some "bits" for the new phone. Well... everyone loves toys, don't they? I bought one of these, and I'm happy to say it fits neatly under the black gel case that came with the phone, and is completely unnoticable. Add one of these, and one of these, and voila, Qi charging, which is working as I'm typing this. I've just worked out it cost me almost half-as-much again as I actually paid for the phone.

I used to love Qi charging, so handy to have a charge pad at work and one in the car.
However, the Oppo is so damned good at keeping charge that plugging in overnight is all I ever need now.

Pretty amazing gadgets we have these days.
Haven't plugged in in 2 years. Charging pad next to bed and in car.
The POLMXS rubber rectangular charging pad in car is so dependable I don't even have to look when placing it down to charge. It's almost same size and shape as phone. Just position phone in top corner of pad and you can feel it vibrate when it has recognized the phone.
