Must Stop Looking At eBay A sweet little valve preamp is on its way. Oh dear. It doesn't even have the essential remote control capability.

Amplification complete swap-round. Now with TAGMcLaren AV32R preamp and Primaluna valve power amp Not quite the transparency and rez of the Myryad pre / ICE monos, but very entertaining in its own way. Probably a bit "easier" to listen to. There should be an old friend of a SET valve power amp up and running in a week or so.

Is the TAG a new purchase or have you had it a while Jerry, I can't remember ...

It's fairly new, I've had it a month or so. A long time for me! It's a surprisingly nice piece of gear - it gets enthusiastic reviews online and I can hear why. It arrived a week or so ahead of the NAD M15 and got a bit sidelined by that. The 20yo on board DAC is especially nice. It really is! A Burr Brown affair, I believe.

Yes, 100% classical these days, Andy.
Even some of my old non classical favourites like Loreena McKennitt or, as Jules says, The Buggles, don't get any play time these days.

An RME ADI 2 DAC got itself plumbed in today. www.rme-audio.de/adi-2-dac.htmlHigh spec delta sigma DAC with loadsa eq and tone control features. It's a digital preamp with volume control, too - RCA and XLR outputs. Headphone amp, as well. Started off with it driving the Primaluna valve amp, I thought that would give it its best chance. Flat, anaemic, uninteresting. Damn, it's heading for the classifieds already. Thought I may as well try it with the class D ICE monoblocks. Wow, much better. Actually enjoyable to listen to. Didn't expect that. The RME and ICEs have XLR sockets and are said to work best from them. Balanced cables in, and it won't be going on the classifieds yet after all. Very impressive as a balanced setup. Took a while to start to understand the complex menu system. The booklet, while copious, is strangely confusing and unhelpful. Just had to twiddle away until it did what I wanted! So yes, pleased so far. But a new valve amp arrived today - I hope it gets on better with the RME than the Primaluna does

The RME isn't known as the 'Swiss Army Knife' DAC for nothing then ...

Yes, that looks like my kind of DAC. Balanced outputs and digital volume. No need for a preamp.

A couple of questions for you jandl100 , if you don't mind: (1) Out of all the gear that's passed through your hands, which component has surprised you the most? a) In a good way, and b) In a bad way (2) Which components have given you the most fun? (Current components excluded)

Jerry stop box swapping and buy something real.
Violin.
Cello.
Oboe.
Flute.
Piccolo.
Trombone.
Saxophone.
Spanish guitar.
Then learn. You have the time. You'd bloody love it. Don't think you're not musical you are.

(Current components excluded) I always have trouble with these type of absolute best ever/worst ever type of questions. Life seems to be a lot more complex than they allow for without going into a 5000 word explanation that would be of little interest to anyone. I'll give it a ponder.

Don't think you're not musical you are. Starting to learn how to play a musical instrument while in pandemic lockdown may not be the best way to foster continuing matrimonial harmony with the Mrs.

(Current components excluded) OK. Without any associated discussion the answers might be.... 1a. Beresford DAC 1b. Linn Unidisk 2. Excluding your exclusion; MBL 116f speakers. Otherwise, the most fun is the continual equipment churn, I just love box swapping - so 'all of them' is probably the best answer. Or sticking literally to your question, maybe Proac Response 2 speakers.
