I'd have that if my wired headphones had a detachable cable

I seem to be going through what has to be regarded as a lofi phase. Bluetooth aptX HD is to blame. I seem to be hooked on the technology. I really like the sound of it. I've been using it for a few weeks now, straight from my phone. Yes, it's lossy. Oh the shame of it. And I'm still really enjoying Spotify, that's doubling up on lossy. So last night, having increasingly felt that I must be losing out, I hooked back up to my old system of laptop > Wireworld Starlight USB cable > Wyred4Sound Recovery reclocker > Halide Bridge USB converter > DAC. Rez, dynamics, instrument separation all took a noticeable step up. Way more impressive. But also a lot less realistic imho. And after a few minutes quite tiring and overbearing. It was a relief to switch back to Bluetooth. Yup, there is a cushion of air between me and the music. Just like being in a concert hall with the musicians about 30 feet or more away. Big orchestral sounds magnificent, huge swathes of well focused tonally rich sound with the brass breathtakingly ripping through. Love it. I feel a lot more comfortable with it now that I tried returning to my old ways and found them wanting. Maybe it's an age thing - 65 in a few months. If only I smoked I could do the full pipe and slippers. It's just as well I'm in virus lockdown, so no hifi buddies can come over and tell me how crap it sounds.

Hahah...love that last line Jerry . I use Spotify and Bluetooth headphones quite often and I love the sound . I much prefer a more easy going sound which I can listen to for a long time , however , I've been like that for years now . I went through the ' that sounds impressive ' stage a long time ago and prefer the ' pipes and slippers ' approach

In my new room you can listen from 30ft away LOL. Back there everything kind of gels together. Closer up really is more front seat take me for a ride and give me some proper stereo. It is nice to have that flexibility. I'll fix up a back row seat for you ready for 2025;)

A nicely worthwhile if moderate revelation. I've been looking to try a R-2R ladder DAC - appalling measurements according to those that measure, but great to listen to according to some of those who listen. So a MyST 1866 DAC came along on eBay and I snapped it up. myst.pro/en/page/myst_potradac_1866_ocubBattery powered, charged by the MiniUSB port. It's very small about 5 inches long. I've only used it so far via the line out into my preamp, so bypassing its own volume control. Very good sound overall, quite a bold presentation - where it stands out from the crowd for me is texture. Very fine grained low level rez, very noticeable on strings, you can hear the gut vibrate. Also tonal body. And the imaging is somehow "deep" and very well defined. Really draws me in. I can't fault it in terms of picking out "issues", and it excels in some ways.

Bet you'd like a Denafrips DAC, Jerry.

Apparently Denafrips = Dynamic, Exquisite, Natural, Attractive, Fidelity, Refined, Intoxicating, Pure, Sophisticated

Looks like a bit of a bargain Jerry - most of the other R2R DACs are much more expensive.

Although small simple chassis and battery psu should make it cheaper without hopefully degrading the sound quality. It does sound very good. But if a Denafrips comes along at a nice price I'm sure I'll be tempted!

The Holo Audio DACs would also be worth investigating.

Just been reading the recent Stereophile review of a £5k Holo Audio DAC. The word palpable leapt out as being very appropriate for the sound I am hearing.

Have you ever had a Meitner Jerry? Yes, although I can't recall the model. It was a very easy listen, I wish I'd had it to listen to longer. I swapped it out for a while when something new came along, and when I put it back in I forgot it was a 110V model. Whoops.
