Brimars? You'll be using Dullards next!! Look forward to hearing more about your DAC frenzy. The Rega is certainly piquing my interest.

Brimars? You'll be using Dullards next!! What! Gosh, no. Wonderful things, just so musical. Way more open and lively than Dullards. Micromega DAC arrived today, Chord Gem will be here tomorrow. Then 5 days. Patience, Grasshopper.

For years I wanted one of those yummy Micromega CD transports. Never did find one. They did more impressive ones. The first time I heard a pair of Martin Logan Quests they was driven by Audio Research V140 monoblocks and a Micromega CDR recording of Elvis on vinyl at a London show. This is a lot of years ago. My mind was blown. Even now it would still be excellent. I still vividly remember it. That Micromega had a huge perspex lid which looked very cool.

Micromega transports developed a reputation for poor reliability due to some models, it nearly killed the company. But lovely machines, unique styling.

DACs Galore. Top right shelf - Micromega, Chord Gem. And the surprisingly wonderful Nobsound NS-08P preamp. Top left shelf - Chord Mojo. Bottom left- Rega DAC [on its side, resting]. Not a Chinese DAC in sight. -except for the Bluetooth DAC in the Nobsound pre, and that's pretty decent, actually. Primaluna valve power amp still plumbed in. Have so far today connected the Micromega. 1st impressions are that it out-Regas the Rega in terms of palpability and tonal vibrancy and substantially closes the gap with the Mojo in terms of lucidity. The Rega could well be on its way! But it's early days hours yet.

I am not sure if Micromega isn't one of the coolest sounding hi-fi brand names.

The Chord Gem didn't last long, kind of vague and (despite reviews saying it has wonderful 3D soundstaging) rather flat.
Luckily I bought it BIN on ebay from a dealer with a no quibble return policy, so it goes back tomorrow.
Back to the cannily named Micromega, ahhhh, music.

I'll be interested in your final opinion of the Mojo, Jerry. Something rather odd I noticed on eBay was that not long after its release huge (and I do mean huge, comparatively) numbers of them turned up for sale, used. This was probably inside four to six weeks of its release.
I've often wondered if they were actually poor DACs, or whether the number of them for sale simply reflected the amount sold in some way. The only reason I noticed is that at the time I was DAC hunting, so checked eBay multiple times a day, and the Mojo really stuck out like a sore thumb to me.

Paul - yes, there are still loads of Mojo DACs on ebay, several seem to come up every day. Regardless, I think it's genuinely excellent and would be happy to use it as my main system DAC, not just as a portable headphone driver.
Jules - I think it's the original Micromega DAC, the user guide implies that as well. So it's the 'Micromega DAC'.

Yup, the mid 90s Micromega DAC is Rega+. Weird how the older the DAC technology is the more I like it! I wonder if it's possible to get a clockwork power supply for it?

Returning to the comparison of the B&O H7 and iMeister IEM Bluetooth headphones. ... It's something to do at 445am having been woken by the cat! I usually have trouble getting back to sleep again if I'm woken up. The iMeister definitely win on clarity and definition. The H7 have a tonally fuller sound with deeper bass but a bit less sparkle at the top. It takes a few minutes to adjust to the H7 sound, it seeming decidedly murky in comparison to start with. But it is enjoyable in its own right after that with maybe better soundstaging, both are good to listen to. Bluetooth pairing is easier with the iMeister, my B&O can need a few attempts. The IEMs stayed secure even when fairly lightly inserted (which gives optimal sound quality for me, see previous post) on an extended quite vigorous hike through quite steep woodlands. The especially cool thing about the iMeister IEMs is that there is a blue LED that faces forward and flashes every 5 seconds - it makes me look like a Borg drone. I'm not sure if I will be keeping the H7. The iMeister are certainly a bargain at under £30.

As you're not afraid to dabble in tubes, have you considered the Border Patrol DAC? It is tube rectified and gets glowing (!) reviews!
