That was a good system, John. You maybe could have added a sub if you liked the sound already.

Yes it sounded good and I came close to adding a sub. It had a really nice open sound with plenty of detail but no harshness(the reginartor helped a lot with that) plenty of punch too. I once heard it with a sub and two super tweeters the sound really was very special but I just could not afford to go down that route at the time I think if I did I would of never gone down the route of Open Baffles

My Turntable History My first proper TT was a Gyro I had a SME 309 and transfiguration Spirit. Sound was underwhelming for me, but might of been cart arm phonostage Think I was using a EAR 864 Upgraded to the Orbe Sound had a good bit more weight A year without a TT but then bought a Auro Gold it was somewhere between the Orbe and Gyro Then without a TT for 3 to 4 years I managed to get a VPI mk 4 with a HD platter I thought at the time the best TT in my system. Had a SME 4 arm. I had a spare arm board and Vic from Trans fi came round to try his arm. For me a big upgrade in sound so changed the arm. I then went all crazy and converted the dec to a reference super scoutmaster with rim drive. Yet again a nice upgrade until Vic brought the Verus motor along and it was in just a different league. Sold the VPI and about a year latter got a Salvation which is a keeper

I love the build quality and service of SME arms. I just don't like their sound. Descriptions such as 'grey' and 'anodyne' seem to ring true. I've owned an S-II Improved, III and IV. Although a little soft, the III is much underrated. The IV has great bass but is ultimately dynamically limited.

Yes I have to agree with you moving to the Terminator was a whole new ball game.
I am just got the latest Bug Head update and now using it on BHSQ The sound is just so good Hard to believe a bit of software can make this much difference
For those of you with Jriver you can link this player into Jriver should be a nice upgrade and totally free

Not much to report Bug Head continues to improve in SQ The designer keeps updating and over the last few months the sound has improved.I keep thinking he cannot get anymore but somehow finds a way to improve. The player itself is not the most friendly player to use as takes awhile to figure out the best sounds and it has a hidden menu that really takes things further. I added Audioquest Jiterbug took about 50 hrs to fully settle in and considering how cheap this is a worth while upgrade for those using USB

Visited Vic today I not been for awhile and we had a very interesting afternoon The System www.trans-fi.com/my-system The new speaker baffle design certainly works well Vic has also modified the Bantam a bit using a cap to limit its bass (Vic has active bass so does need to be sending so much bass to his Markaudio 12p Alpairs), this has helped free up the sound a lot. The other big change is the Benedict Audio phonostage which is a sensational Phonostage www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/0215/Benedict_Audio_HotHead_JFET_MM_MC_Phonostages_Review.htm What has happened is the noise floor has been lowered a lot and just allowing the music to flow on vinyl. It was one of the most musical experiences I ever heard, pinpoint imaging and micro detail but most important musical flow The digital system is not in the same league in Vic system. I think MQn has gone as far as it can and the gains to be had is by adopting a specialist low noise PC based system similar to the route taken by people like Gaz Tim and Tony C is the way to push this further. Hi John. I really interested that you have heard this system , You don't mention about bass responds, was it dood. Can you tell me more about the sound of Vics system. Thanks

His bass response is deep and extended it captures the texture of the instrument, and can slam when needed to. The 12p drivers work really well the sound is very clean and natural. Mark Fenton the designer heard Clive version of this and was really impressed how well the bass intergrated with the system, he was expecting to hear phase differences but could not hear any. I no idea where it is against your system as both systems have changed so much. My own take on your system is wait and see what difference if any when we try Bug Head in your system in a few weeks time. I am hoping you maybe surprised but time will tell. I suspect a lot more to come from your digital front end

I've got to tell this story about Bug Head. As you alluded John, the Alpair driver designer came to visit as well the crossover designer for a new speaker. There was a comment early in the day re computer setups..."it just digital", meaning not quite bits are bits, more there's not much you can do to change what you get with digital. We tried out quite a system few setups and because of the frequent changes I used Foobar/ASIO (WASAPI was too sharp) as it was quicker set tracks playing. When we'd settled on speaker setup I snuck in Bug Head. The comments went:
"Whoa, what have you just done?" I replied, "it's just digital" The response was something like "you bastard", meant in a humorous way...I think!

Perhaps we can have a new topic about this "bug head" thingy ?
I had a quick trawl on the Interweb and opinions seem mixed.

Today I had my ears syringed as was noticing a decrease in my ability to hear. Gosh I am having to turn down the volume by a few steps. It is like a new upgrade

Nice one John, I know what that's like! I've been having my ears cleaned a couple of times a year since I was a kid. The best way of cleaning them nowadays is microsuction, as it irritates your ears the least, but I have to pay for a private clinic to get it. Happy listening.

Me too - I've not had it done for a couple of years as it's not been as bad of late, but when it does need doing the difference is incredible.
