I agree about scratching that itch, John. For me it was cables for a while, but I am done with them. Now it's supports and I'm getting there. I think supports will go on and on Once I have the Mana swap done I'm into more comparing of supports and looking at removing feet and trying all sorts, then looking at casings........

I have found Dreamer on Supertramp's Crime of the Century especially helpful with assessing supports. All that soundstage panning and pinpoint focus, as well as just being a truly great album.

Had a session with a friend today seeing if MQn has taken over the Blue Ray with the Caiman MK2 so I was using my Blue ray and my friend a windows 8 laptop with the Cunas. I brought my own cables this time and even after changing cables we both could not separate them no matter what music we threw at them. I always get a bit worried with these visits as if I hear a significant difference it means I cannot go back to what I heard before I get to frustrated so nice that I left still happy with my current digital set up

Great outcome, John.
My Caiman II works much better than its predecessor the Bushmaster II when running from the Blu-ray player.

The other interesting bit from the day we could hear no difference from the £45 ebay pair of interconnects I got and the £1500 pair my friend uses

\it works well in my system put it up against quite a few cables, its does have a flaw is that it is not great of addressing RFI so you have to be careful with it I do not want to start another cable debate

One of the things I do differently to most is a active bass set up with DSP In the past I was using to sub plates to power my bass drivers I now use a DSP amp for bass I have pre out on my Bantam that goes directly to my power amp This gives me a lot of control over slopes, gain etc. It has taken awhile for me to suss how to get the best out of the drivers and now feel like I have the speed power and articulation to rival any speakers regardless of cost Now that I gotten used to this I could not go back

I would lose heart trying to do something that complicated (to me)
Certainly have to have my main system running while hat was coming on song

Its not as bad as it sounds and you can adjust in real time, its just the fine tuning that takes time

I cannot explain how much my heart sinks when a tweak, 'upgrade' or move goes wrong, resulting in poor sound quality. Add in the lack of confidence twiddling and I have a self fulfilling prophecy Add to that doing the odd daft thing...
Whenever my main system is crippled I'm really unhappy.

Had a interesting chat about PC audio and Jplay last night. We both agreed we do not like what Jplay is doing to the sound. I used to be a big fan of Jplay, it was the first bit of software that made a difference to using a netbook as a music player in my system. It went through many changes but about a year ago it started to go down a route that I could not enjoy. The sound had a harshness to it and once I could pin point it I could not go back to Jplay. I really do believe PC audio done right is very capable. I like the convenience of getting of accessing music easily and over the last few years I heard PC audio improve in SQ. Interesting times ahead

It's funny you should mention JPlay John because I installed that and JRiver on my system about three weeks ago to hear for myself why so many people rate it. Having spent hours researching how to set it up correctly I and the missus spent the evening playing a selection of tracks we know very well on both JRiver and Foobar. Regardless of the bit depth or resolution of the ripped file a clear winner emerged by the end of the evening, and it wasn't JRiver. After a lengthy discussion we both agreed that Foobar delivered the more natural presentation, less 'processed' if you will. This was most apparent on live recordings, as one would expect, with the natural acoustic of the venue coming alive in the Foobar session. It was present in the same tracks played on JRiver but it sounded contrived, almost as if it had been added for effect.
We also both agreed that we much preferred Foobar's simple and concise interface over the bells and whistles of the JRiver example, which is needlessly complex IMHO. One more thing which really irks me about JRiver is that it distributes thousands of tiny files throughout my media libraries, which have now gone as I uninstalled JRiver very shortly after the session...
