It's a real step forwards taking no-one's opinion of any piece of kit for granted, isn't it? I seem to have been a bit susceptible lately to "forum opinions" and imo wasted a fair bit of £splosh. I'd have been better off following my own instincts - after all, they are based on my own experience and preferences! Who can you trust ? Useful to have someone somewhere

Well, I know someone with a lot of experience in a wide range of gear who has the same musical tastes as I do. Me.

I think my recent kit is a mix of items I've bought on instinct (Sonus Faber & Audio Synthesis) and those where others have been influential (ATB streaming etc and Chinese RVC) - the latter did sterling service by the recommendation of a certain jandl100 geezer; I also bought a Mojo on his rec which I'm yet to try.

You and I have very different equipment, John, but have followed similar paths in terms of focussing our systems to do one thing very well. I think you hit the nail on the head

Had to smile at this... Modifed 3D Nu Vista £5000 ..... BT 5 receiver £30 I had £2000 worth of mods done by Audiocom on the NuVista. It did transform the Cd player to becoming the beast it looked like

Interesting this concept of influnces. The last few years My speakers are very much influenced by Vic and trying in my own system. By the way I heard a lot of Open Baffle loudspeakers that were not for me as were not great with rock. The digital side has been mostly my own journey and for a while I followed Martin and Martin also followed me a bit. The mains mostly my own and hearing what the Coherent QP1 did in Martins system. Grounding a reluctant person to the party a bit influenced by Mike, Martin and Tony at Coherent Systems.

Interesting to see some of your old kit John, the Gamut must have been a lovely amp. I suspect the Gamut was being held back the speakers at the time. I really would not need that extra clout now. It certainly was a good few steps above my previous amps I had Musical Fidelity XA 200 for mid bass and the XA50 for the treble Not the cleanest amplifier ever designed for sure.

I guess the other thing to notice with two systems is the first one is a traditional system and the current one is anything but traditional I am trying to remember the strengths of the earlier system. A good mid with reasonable bass and treble but nothing special in any area.

If we're going back that far, I had Musical Fidelity CDP and MF bi-amp, and ProAc speakers. What a rabbit hole! A single well constructed DIY Tube amp wiped the floor with the MF amps! Tannoy HPD dual concentrics wiped the floor with the ProAcs.
I know how much better my horn system sounds vs any of that lot.
Plug and play vs bespoke/evolved.

Tannoy HPD dual concentrics wiped the floor with the ProAcs. OMG, not for me they wouldn't. Hideous sounding things, Tannoy dual concentrics! Just goes to show that we all perceive things differently and we all have our own path to follow.

I generally find that the folks who are largely DIY have really focused hard on the particular aspects of the sound that are important to them and very neatly press those particular buttons.
Which is great! They've precisely tuned their systems to do what they want.
But if someone else comes along with a different set of hot buttons the sound can seem rather more hit and miss.
Obviously, that's just a general observation, having heard quite a few DIYed systems but not either John's or Steve's.

To a degree i think everyone does this we all have a system set to our particular preference

I know, but I thought a '1984' twist might be more in keeping with the times!
