My friend sent me the Kefs HTS-3001 to try in my system I was quite happy with the Faitals the best full range speakers I heard for rock. It took a while to dial in the right xo for my system if this is to high the bass causes the sound to become bloated so it takes a few tracks to get the balance to my liking The Kefs have no nasty spikes in the sound. Looking back the Faitals definitely had a sweet spot in terms of db. Whilst the Kefs perform well across different volume levels I can now go as loud as I want without feeling the need to turn it down Bass is better too I got another octave in bass and really enjoying this it seems the high xo I had with the Faitals were limiting the bass. Pretty sure going down to about 20hz now. The other lesson is just how well my digital front end is sorted

Playing with your system is good, John, as I know you keep the balance between fiddling and listening.

I love it when something like a fairly easy driver swap out pays dividends👍

Yes, it's *too* simple
How could that work out so well ?!

As Steve points out it is easy with this type of setup to change drivers. It is then a case of altering xo and volume to match This is a lot easier than you would imagine

What are you using for altering the XO John?

The Kef running full range but no ported bass as it bloates the sound. Xo is done on the fly from the Behringer as the Kefs are less sensitive I also have to lower the volume so just adjusting the neos. As a result bass is close to Vic levels as the neos are not being pushed so hard

Have a chat with Vic Ali. I believe mid and treble in his system now as good as his bass.

A few small changes I changed the Kefs drivers to the se centre uni drivers £100 each.
I think time to reflect and perhaps do my best impression of Mike.
I got the centres modified by my friend damping the case this took a couple of hours.
Listening last night was a revelation I not heard notes explode from the silence. It's very addictive. Also mid bass is on a new level I am hearing new levels of detail I have never heard before in any system I am now convinced the only way to hear this is with nimble drivers that are good between 80 to 500 range otherwise you just not going to get this extra dimension to the sound In short more music
My other reflection is how good my digital side is I know I gone down the dark side and embraced Bluetooth as simple to use and creates little noise due to the simplicity of the design Having a modified Mutec reclocking and the RTZ cleaning up noise on the DAC and Mutec takes everything up a few more steps
I really wish others could hear I think people would like where it has headed

I think I must be the only person I know where the value of my system has decreased over the years but yet the sound quality has improved.
Nuts I know but that is how it has worked.

Hehe, I don't use my SP-10, arm, cart, phono stage anymore, all cash tied up, so ditching them would see it drop in invested ££££'s. The rest is a load of birch plywood and home crafted horns😂 I do have some nice compression drivers and tweeters though.

Pre Open Baffle | Current System | Modifed 3D Nu Vista £5000 | BT 5 receiver £30 | VPI Rim Drive £6000 | Mutec modified £1000 | Balanced Preamp £2000 | Topping D70 £330 | Gamut D200 Modified £4000 | Temple Mono blocks £1200 | Phonostage £1000 | Behringer Power amp £300 | Wharfedale Opus 3 £3000 | Power Supplies £1200 | Cables and accessories £1000 | RTZ cables and accessories £1800 | Row 9 column 1 | Loudspeaker £900 to build | Total £22000 | Total £6790 |
I had a lot of money invested in my vinyl side and would say vinyl was primary playback then. If I was to look at the different systems the first one seems a lot better balanced in terms of where the money has gone. Accessories include Black Ravioli pads and feet in the second column. Hard to believe so much of my system is tied up in grounding and mains supplies. But all goes to help in improving the noise floor. What would I like to try and see how they compare. The Gamut against the Temple monos. I no idea which would be better. The rest I have no regrets in moving on.

Interesting to see some of your old kit John, the Gamut must have been a lovely amp.

You and I have very different equipment, John, but have followed similar paths in terms of focussing our systems to do one thing very well.

Had to smile at this...
Modifed 3D Nu Vista £5000 ..... BT 5 receiver £30
I'm broadly similar thanks to Bluetooth.
I ended up not liking the Temple Monos much, just a bit meh and uninteresting imo. I think I was overly swayed by the opinion of a big spender on the Wigwam. I really should know to make my own mind up by now!

I really should know to make my own mind up by now! It's a real step forwards taking no-one's opinion of any piece of kit for granted, isn't it?

I seem to have been a bit susceptible lately to "forum opinions" and imo wasted a fair bit of £splosh. I'd have been better off following my own instincts - after all, they are based on my own experience and preferences!
