Go back to basics - put one music file on a different USB stick and see if that works. Then use a process of elimination.

With regards to the USB input I think one is faulty as tried a different input and managed to get decent sounds from my files Not quite up with the SOTM but if not being critical very decent

If you can make a network share the files will probably sound better.

Humour me....I'm confused. Are you trying to mount the disk in the PC on the Pi? Do you have a standalone USB disk drive you can plug into the Pi or router?

Clive, the issue is that the Pi's USB interface is ok but not great.
What John is trying to do is share files from his PC. He needs to set up the folder as a share and give it permissions (giving Everyone read permissions is often fine for music files). Then he needs to get his Pi to access the IP address of the PC, give it the folder name and it should work and start indexing the contents.

OK, I can understand that a network share from Windows will be "fun" with the Pi, I know the Pi USB is very much frowned upon and I'd concurr in terms of connecting a DAC (and disk + DAC on USB at the same time would be even worse). For files though I've struggled to hear a difference vs a disk served from from my router. Maybe the stories of the Pi sounding bad with USB disks were pre the Pi 3? I've been using a USB drive for well over a year, it's powered by the Pi and hasn't missed a beat or been noisy in any way. I suppose I just want a simple life nowadays!

Actually I have to say that John's Pi with DigiOne sounded superb from a USB drive connected locally when we had it on my system, so I would agree that the Pi 3 seems to have sorted USB. I also admit that my Pi 2 with USB wi-fi dongle is doing a supreme job, so it's not just any use of USB.
For me, however, I'm looking forward to receiving my Pi 3 and running it with no USB peripherals at all. I'll put my very few hi-res files on a share but mostly won't bother with local files.

My only experience is with a Pi 3 with it's integrated wi-fi. I suppose any contention on the USB, ie with a USB wi-fi dongle could be an issue coupled with a Pi 2 being less powerful.

John, let's walk through the share process.
Right-click the folder you want to give the Pi access to It's best if this is a root folder in your C: drive as you avoid folder depth issues in Windows 10, click Give access to | Specific people... Then type EVERYONE and click Add It should default to Read permission Click Share and you will have setup a share folder.
Open Explorer in another computer and type \\COMPUTERNAME (use the share computer's name shown in Control Panel | System) If asked for credentials, give the username and password of the share computer Do you see the share folder? Now type \\IPADDRESS (use the share computer's IP address) Do you see the same share folder?
If successful, you've setup your share folder. Use the IP address and share folder name shown, and the username and password for credentials.
If any of the above doesn't work, fix it before trying with the Pi.

I did get a small improvement using a decent flash drive but I have to be very careful with the physical location of my Buffalo and where I plug the damn wall wart to avoid a negative effect.

John I've just tested my BT Home Hub's USB socket as a music server and it works fine. All I had to do was copy a load of music files to a USB stick and plug it in. In Volumio, I added a new NAS drive called Hub with IP address of 192.168.1.254 (the default) and folder called music (what I named the USB volume to after formatting it). It scanned and plays the music no problem. I can also see it and copy more files to it from any machine by pointing Explorer to \\192.168.1.254\music
