I used a VX220 as a daily driver for three years and as the wife wanted a Mini Convertible I had to get something with a boot. VX gone and BMW 130i takes its place; 3 litre straight six is such a silky smooth yet powerful motor. Next? Well I tend to buy cars out of season because anything with a soft top is a little cheaper in the autumn or winter. I'm thinking Honda S2000, Caterham/Westfield or perhaps another VX220 towards the end of this year. A Westfield or Caterham as a daily driver? You are a brave man... They are not a lot of fun in the wet, and my choice would be the S2000 or a VX220/Elise with a proper hardtop for winter. Aah, I meant keep the 130i for daily duties and whichever for the decent days/weekends.

I'm about to put the CR-Z up for sale with a little tear in my eye. Owning it has been a blast and it definitely gave me back my love of driving. Small, two-door, manual are all the things I wanted and I'm keeping to that profile. I'm still on track to buy the car in my o/p, a Subaru BRZ. I'm considering a white one as the shape looks so good in that colour. It would look nice next to Ruth's white TT

Surprise. Thought that was a keeper.
Careful with Subaru, reliability and parts prices. White is the best colour for nearly all cars

I am also surprised that you are changing the car, Martin, I know how much you liked it.
Are you not tempted back to one of the German cars?

I love it, but it's over three years old and it has done its job of pointing me to something even more purebred.
No, I'm done with German cars. Driving Ruth's Audi TTS reminds me of my previous BMW 335d Coupe, both rocket ships but too heavy to make beautiful handling cars around country roads. The Audi especially feels vague and anodyne and pretty disconnected from the outside world. Turbo lag doesn't help. Shame, because it's a looker.

White is the best colour for nearly all cars <sputter> You did mean black, right? Nope. An honest punter confessing the truth. Black for hifi and socks. White for cars. Looks so much better on almost any car. Talking binding, as I used to for many years Black for comb binding. White for wire binding. Looked just right.

I thought my old and beloved Saab was going to be beyond economical repair a few months back and stepson's Focus came up. That almost happened too. Got me thinking about my next car and I surveyed all the cars I saw on the many bike rides. Comes down to Focus Estate later version or two Mondeo Estate two later versions Mazda 6 (I think it was) estate Vauxhall Insignia estate Vauxhall Astra estate, latest version Audi/Skoda/VW estate Are you spotting a pattern ? This is on size available and looks so far. Has to drive pretty well but then I don't drive much at all. If I look at why I like the Saab 9000 so much then some of the above may well rule themselves out.

Yes we're most likely to get an estate for our next car Mike - am thinking about Mazda 6 / Honda Accord / Skoda Octavia.

What is wrong with the Toyota version? Nothing at all wrong with the GT86, it and the BRZ are effectively the same car. It's just that Subaru manufactures them all, it's a Subaru boxer engine, it has slightly better spec where it counts and has a more interesting modding community.

They drive well but build quality is pants, and reliability can't match the Japanese cars ...

Ford are poor and Vauxhall a disaster. Just avoid.

I didn’t realise that Ford had dropped so much from a reliability perspective. I agree with Vauxhall.

Current favourite for me is a Ford. Reliability is at least fair so far as I know.
Hopefully this is still a long way off

My two steps have a Fiesta and Ka between them. Neither have been fault-free.

I got a white Mazda 3 as a company car. Don't like it.
Too flimsy, not set out right for the dog and it gets too filthy too quickly.
Bloody white car in a port! Madness.
