Not sure about WD40, but I read somewhere about people using PVA.

There are loads of forum threads on it if you google WD40 and Records. Plenty argument about long term issues for vinyl but interesting to read if anyone wants to know more

I find a belt sander removes all trace of dirt! Seriously though, I agree with Daniel's observations (2.23 post). (why aren't these posts numbered, it would be handy)

Were there any comments on the thought of spraying WD40 on ones vinyl ? Who in their right mind is going to try that? Gash vinyl is easy enough to find, but do you want to risk your precious stylus with WD40, that may well soften the glue for all I know?
What exactly is meant to be the effect? Do tell.
