Which turntable, belt-driven or direct-drive, would be the recommended starter deck or would it just depend on budget at the time.

Agreed with all those who suggest an RCM, invaluable if you're going to buy second-hand records.
- RCM
- Good cleaning liquid
- Nagaoka or similar anti-static inner sleeves
- Good carbon fibre record brush
- AT stylus cleaning fluid
- Good carbon fibre stylus cleaner
Now you're good to go!

Also, do you want to buy new, or are you happy to look at second hand or vintage options? Yes or no to auto-stop/return? Would you prefer a detachable headshell - more straightforward for switching and maintaining carts - or are you not fussed?

"So, with Turntable and Phono Pre-amp in hand what other kit would you say is essential in getting the best from those charity shop finds and new vinyl".
IMO this is an impossible silly question , picking your turntable on the basis of its drive system is like choosing a wife on the basis she as a vagina .

I took Paul to be asking for recommendations of either drive - that is, not restricted to either belt or direct - rather than for a recommendation of one or the other.

I've never owned a turntable and had my mind set on an entry level rega or pro-ject, until someone mentioned direct drive. Hence the question. Sorry for the twatty questions DQ. I shouldn't hang around on this thread if it's doing your noggin' in, there will plenty more to come I reckon.

Paul - I would likely recommend a Pro-ject (although not a Debut if your funds can stretch a little further) if you want a new deck. If you're looking on the used market, that opens up many possibilities.

I've not had first hand experience of the Pro-Jects, but I've heard quite a number of people complaining that the entry level one - the Debut Carbon, I think? - has a noisy motor, and 'hum' issues (Google turns up a lot of hits). Also relevant is the kind of music you'll be listening to - if you listen to a lot of classical or dance (or both, like me!), then going for something with very good wow/flutter might be preferable, and so a direct drive could be a better choice.

I try not to ambiguity in point of a posters post get in the way of me making a concise , brilliant and funny post Heh, probably wise. Though, I'm not sure that the analogy really works, unless - contrary to my present understanding - there are two kinds of vagina (though, I admit I haven't conducted an exhaustive survey)

of course it works , all women have a vagina , all turntables have a drive system . Differences in them are irrelevent in the choice of a women or turntable .
Having said this i do have a distate of cheap AC motors found on many turntables including the project i think.

OK chaps, duly noted. I've nothing against a pre-owned turntable. In fact I'll probably get more for my money of course. I may also get an aneurysm trying to set the f***er up. We shall see.

Whereabouts are you based Paul? There might well be someone local who can help you with the set-up if needed ...
I'd go for second-hand - what are you looking at, around £200?

If someone has an old record and wants to try something quite astonishing. Spray it lightly with WD40 and then play it

The inference is that spraying WD40 on vinyl will be good, but why not say what effect YOU found ?

Astonishing can be bad as well as good , so your inference may not correct .
And , best to find out these things for yourselves I find , though i would worry about my cartridge .

We shall see. 2nd hand will get you so much more value than new. Best to see it working if you can and then ask here if there is any setting up to do I really liked not having to be so damned careful when I went the Technics route - as you do with a sprung deck like a Linn. There are a few direct drive fans here too
