Ride of the Valkyries is also remarkably potent live of course and fascinating to hear it in all its detail as opposed to hearing it on Classic FM or the like!
Little did I know, as a Wagner ignoramus, that the 'motif' of that work is repeated many times in 'Götterdämmerung' ...

Not to mention the wedding march from Lohengrin, surely the most frequently played piece of Wagner in existence?

A nice introduction from Vasily Petrenko about how the Wagner Grand Festival came to be.

I read enough of the Spectator article before it hit the Paywall to put me off, or whatever the strongest version of "put me off" might be.

"In The Carnival of the Animals, Lang Lang and his pianist wife Gina Alice set up shop as taxidermists: none of the beasts survives the grip of their steely fingers." Oh dear

More of an Alfred Brendel cerebral type of performer.

I was reading about the Yo-Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott recital at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco tomorrow. It's nearly sold out yet the cheapest ticket on offer is $500!!
Two things come to mind. Firstly, you wouldn't get away with charging those prices in the UK. Secondly, the SF Symphony is an institution in crisis with huge deficits, planned cuts (such as normal international touring) and the recent departure of Essa-Pekka Salonen amongst this cluster of a quagmire. It's amazing that they are in perennial penury with so many wealthy punters seemingly willing to fill the coffers. I suspect these kind of American institutions are heavily dependent on huge philanthropic endowments to keep them going so why SF can't do better in this regard I have no idea. And who will want to take up the baton there in this grim period of transition. Surely time to give young home grown talent a rare chance!

It's been the norm that UK orchestras suffer more with finances than their US counterparts.
They need to build up their own talent, I agree. Perhaps Americans only go for the big names? My eyes have been opened by such as the Amati and Basingstoke Symphony Orchestras.

Some US orchestras are run much more successfully than others. Ah, here's a clue - "At the top of the salary range, pay for a member of the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra starts at a little over $150,000 per year." "Principals, the ranking member of each orchestra section, can make a great deal more, in some instances more than $400,000. And most major orchestras play for a season lasting only about nine-months a year." work.chron.com/much-money-orchestra-musicians-make-15161.htmlGood grief! Compare that to their European counterparts. That must be an eye-watering dent in the annual budget before anything else...

A fascinating visit to the Festival Hall last Saturday with mixed results for Stravinsky VC and Bruckner 7. My god it was LOUD sitting in the Choir!

I'd love to see the Rite of Spring with the LSO in November but I would have to bring Ruth to it in cuffs.

I'm undecided - Klaus Mäkelä's Stravinsky recording got panned in some quarters, on the other hand his concerts would appear superior to recorded output thus far ...
