Sad. She is a little older than my wife was when the big C finally got her.
We have found the cure to so many things, but cancer still eludes us.

Poor old Simon Rattle - no sooner has he jumped ship from the LSO after the new concert hall he was supposedly promised didn't happen, then apparently the new Munich hall he is counting on is now being costed at over 1 billion Euros and thus looking rather unlikely.

I smell lawsuits and cries of " breach of contract," as long as he had a good lawyer when he signed on with the BRSO.

How can a concert hall cost a billion euros?

Maybe it started to go pear-shaped when the great man's salary was included in the budget

Ah yes, €100M sounds much more reasonable for the concert hall

^ I skim-read the Guardian article.
One term stood out for me - vanity project. All of them. My goodness, the ultimate in crazinesses. They all deserved to fail. Those levels of spend are unnecessary and can't be justified imo.
The whole concert hall creation thing seems to have turned into an international my genitals are bigger than yours contest.

I guess maybe it depends what kinds of income these places can generate beyond selling tickets for classical concerts.
Presumably they have an array of bars and restaurants, galleries, shops, conference facilities etc
Marketing opportunities of having the best musicians appearing?
In addition to that one would have to consider the financial benefits of increased tourism that an international concert hall can bring.
It would be interesting to see how the numbers add up.

The whole concert hall creation thing seems to have turned into an international my genitals are bigger than yours contest. Agreed. The interior of the Elbphilharmonie looks spectacular, the exterior nowhere near as good. I'm sure it could have been brought in at half the cost (still huge) without the blown glass lamps and loo brush nonsense. The Sydney Opera House is truly iconic, though, and I'm sure is seen with great pride by the Aussies now. As for the Boston Big Dig, I travelled there for over 20 years only to find the same mess, diversions and traffic chaos each year. Now, it's good and there is no ugly elevated roadway any more. The city paid a big cost while it was going on, though, and will pay for many years to come. $22bn!! I would also include the new Munich airport in the madness. This big white hospital, as it always appears to me, is so modern that they, err, still transport you on a bus to the aircraft. Who designed the bloody thing?

The rather striking Bomsori Kim is a new violin signing to DG. She has plenty of performance videos on her website - www.bomsorikim.com/media/

I hope it doesn't get downgraded to a lick of paint.
In my opinion, the Barbican acoustics are woeful. By comparison, the Festival Hall is lively.

Yes he doesn't sound overly ambitious does he?
I'm so used to the acoustics at those venues I'm not really aware of how good or bad they might be!
