His Mahler 3 with the Concertgebouw is one of the greatest live performances I've ever watched. Mesmerising from start to finish.

Oh, that is very sad news.
I was very lucky to see her at the Festival Hall once. She was a magnificent mezzo/soprano and had incredible presence on stage.
Hers is still my favourite performance of Strauss' Four Last Songs.
RIP.

How wonderful that you were able to see her perform Martin.

It was at the Festival Hall and she was performing in Mahler 2. I'm fairly certain the late great Klaus Tennstedt was conducting but it was a very long time ago.

My son has just started learning the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in D Minor - I didn't even know it existed!
Must get performed extremely rarely and I've never heard it on the radio. What I've heard so far I have liked - never been a great fan of the ever popular E Minor ...

Good luck indeed, nice to have that kind of crossover influence.

^ interesting and depressing.
I recall just one black conductor, I think - Dean Dixon from the days of the late-mono / early stereo era - quite a few recordings but never made it 'big'. I don't even recall ever hearing any, just seeing them around. I must have a listen now!
But, gut reaction, it only seems to be 'black', doesn't it - coloured non-white, fine, from Zubin Mehta to Gustavo Dudamel. They couldn't have higher profile careers. Or maybe they are the exception.
It's a tragedy and I am sure a great loss for us all.

Of course it's pretty rare to see black orchestral musicians, let alone conductors!

doing a bit of looking for Dean Dixon, he worked and recorded with some of the top soloists of his day - Clara Haskil, Antonio Janigro
this is good! ....

Gosh, another great retires. He leaves behind an enormous legacy as a pianist and conductor.
