I would categorise Nige in the same group as Bell, Paul. He's not really my thing and also has a false persona which you can see by watching videos of when he was young. And yes, I have seen him live.

Kennedy's "persona" annoyed the Hell out of me, but the boy had talent. Probably no more talent than a dozen other violinists who were around at the time, but his "gimmick" moved him to the head of the queue. He had to be able to back the hype up with actual playing though. I don't know much about Bell as a person, but I've heard some of his albums and they're not too shabby, at least, not to my ears.

I think Nigel is a more sincere performer and whilst I don't enjoy his style of playing I would choose him over Bell any day of the week.
Bell is simply not a world class violinist, end of. I could name scores of more talented players, both female and male, with better technical and emotional content.

Joshua Bell rubbish? Hah, wrong again, Jules. Here he is with the very talented Yuja Wang in Beethoven's Kreutzer violin sonata. (as recently featured in the classical blog thread). And very very good they both are!

Hmm I don't remember saying he is 'rubbish' - you can only get so far with haircuts alone ... 😀 That Beethoven works well enough but for the big concertos I don't think he is anywhere near the top of the class. Ms Wang much improved in a supporting role where she can't hammer the piano to death LOL.

The Kreutzer sonata is as big as any concerto.

Now here's a pairing - Kremer and Argerich. I will find time to listen to the whole work but from what I have heard is more to my personal taste.

Whew! - Argerich is good! (But so is Wang). Kremer is rather struggling to keep up at times. Bell wins on this occasion imo.

How about this? It's interesting to contrast the styles on the rare occasion when you can actually see all four hands.

Absolutely stunning.
Khatia B carves out those melodies like cascading waterfalls, just gorgeous.

Absolutely stunning. Khatia B carves out those melodies like cascading waterfalls, just gorgeous. the man's obsessed! - they both played well. KB did better in the 'making silly faces' contest, though. ---- KB is withoubt any doubt a great pianist - she just doesn't really 'do' the repertoire that matters most to me and when she tries (e.g. Schubert D960 sonata) she rather shows that her talents do indeed lie elsewhere, so I can't fault her overall judgement in choice of repertoire!

That's sad - he was a very important cellist.

I've got Bylsma's Bach Cello Suites. I shall play it later today. R.I.P. Anner Bylsma

... KB did better in the 'making silly faces' contest, though. It's also great fun watching her and wondering exactly how her boobs stay inside those dresses, Jerry, especially when she goes all animato on the keyboard.

LOL.
I'm not obsessed (much) but I do think Khatia B is possibly the most expressive and naturally gifted performer of her generation.
As for differentiating the two players in the Brahms clip it's very easy - Ms B is playing the sublime upper register melodies which is where you get to shine in this duet!
But I suspect that's not what Martin is getting at. 😁 In their solo work both pianists display a chalk and cheese difference in approach to making music. Both are technically beyond reproach, but their styles of musicality are poles apart and that boils down to your personal preferences at the end of the day. I've stated why I prefer KB's style previously so won't bother repeating myself here. I thank you gentlemen.
