That amp has more history than the Elgin Marbles. Yes I think I'll pass on that one... LOL.
I think the owner is a forum member isn't he?

I've asked the Ebay seller some questions.
If anyone knows "the story" could they PM me the details please ?

I've had two PMs about this amp, and shall we say I'm no longer interested in it.

Ok, I'm hoping you can enlighten me about a subject I do not understand at all - pre and power amp matching in terms of gain etc
Is there a *simple* way of looking at specifications to help one avoid buying a power amp that has too much or too little gain?

Is there a *simple* way of looking at specifications to help one avoid buying a power amp that has too much or too little gain? If you're lucky, you can find the gain spec in dB for your current equipment and then compare with potential candidates. It's rare to find a pre or power amp that is completely incompatible with partnering equipment. Gain is more critical when it comes to MC and MM cartridges.

Apologies chaps, I don't receive emails for PM's and haven't looked in here for a short while...
The TSS on ebay really is shagged out and will need a total rebuild as the potted transformers as well as both amp boards will be suspect now, so cannibalising an otherwise working amp may not be the final fix. It's all documented 'you know where' so no need for me to say any more. It'll make a great door stop though...
[edit] - Don't forget new NVA though. If used correctly (I doubt the TSS ever was) with recommended speaker cables (LS2 is safe, good and cheap), the amps are reliable and sound really great, as any owner will attest, effectively disappearing from the music like few others can.
I have just replied to Julian with apologies. I'm a huge fan of vintage Crown 'D' series amps (in reply to the PM question) which today, in good order and with a modern source and preamp, do a great job I think still. Mine have all needed some work though Do please be aware that ANY forty year old amp will need some respect given it.
Yamaha pro amps have a great reputation and don't cost the earth, but how they'd be with music for pleasure I have no idea. Their domestic integrateds have a greyness to them I don't care for, but this could possibly be tuned out with cabling and so on. I don't know that power amp but do be careful not to listen with your eyes here - so easy to do!

Oh my ... the NVA amp has just sold for £370. Good luck to whoever takes that on!

For some minor work I would say £370 is a steal for an NVA reference amp. I would say it is naive to say it needs a total rebuild when you haven't put any test equipment to it.
