You have James. The time you heard my kit I was still running the 405-2

I'm running a 520f with a valve preamp at the moment and it sounds pretty good to me. I had one of those which laid unused in a box for ages. Sold it on to a friend and checked to see it was still working OK and was pleasantly surprised at how good it sounded. I think it would be a good choice Jules.

But the 520f is not available in silver, nor is it particularly small. I suspect the 606/707/909 family would best fit the brief. I'll be keeping the 520f in my setup for a while.

I dare say it could be. Perhaps not those '1000' watts though!

Another vote for Firebottle's amp; I currently have his loan unit and it's outstanding! Extremely dynamic, loads of power, an all round enjoyable listen. As it's available to test at home in your system you really should have it round for a listen.
Also ticks the other boxes of being a relatively small footprint and silver.

But doesn't tick the boxes of being solid state and over 100w

Has anyone ever heard or owned a Meridian 557?

A serious powerhouse, but just a bit on the bland&boring side, imo. -- although I think that about most Meridian gear I have heard. So ymmv.

I found most Meridian gear flat and bland.

hmm - I'm finding this difficult - nothing is really leaping out at me and saying 'buy me'!

Yes - it's sitting in a box in front of the TV and I've got nothing to try it with ... Got those lovely '50s vintage tubes to experiment with as well at some point!

I think it was a Sugden AU51P that I briefly owned. Not my sort of amp at all - moderate rez, and a bit bland dynamically. It sounded kind of wimpy, actually. I'm not helping, am I?
