Hi all, I have discussed this idea with the Admins and they have given me their blessing to share it with the forum members. My wife inspired me for this as she is a member of a box-swapping group for one of her hobbies, and I thought we could do something similar for music, CD being the more resilient and versatile for this purpose. The premise of this idea is that you firstly find someone to swap with or setup a swap area on the forum, then allocate a budget (suggest: £30-50) to spend on CD's). You purchase however many CD's you can within your budget, agreeing before the any specific genres etc. with the recipient first, and then send them (say your top 5-10 recommended albums) I thought this would be a great opportunity for us music and Hifi lovers to get to know other music that we may have not heard before and without having to spend too much money on it, yes the recipient may end up getting duplicates of albums they already have, but that is a small price to pay, an they could always bin or sell them on. Suggest we set some basic ground rules: - Ensure no personal details (addresses, phone numbers etc.) are given out on the open forum.
- Maximum budget of £50.
- Only purchase of second-hand CD's (to keep the costs down and get the most of the scheme, i.e. get more CD's).
I could imagine there being some admin effort required to manage this effectively which I am happy to offer my services for, but just saw it as an opportunity to get to hear some new music, whilst supporting the forum and the members. Hopefully I have explained the premise well enough, the idea of purchasing the CD's is that we get away from the copyright issues involved with traditional swapping. What does everyone think? a good idea? would any of you be interested in this concept? Paul.

Sounds pretty radical to me. And what if you're not popular and no-one likes you and you're left out of it with no interest shown in your Mantovani collection?

So let me try and outline where I'm confused. Supposing me and Mr Whippy decided to buy some Europop CDs. Is this how it works?
1. We each spend say £30 on some CDs. 2. We sift out the best 5 and send them to each other? 3. We each keep the other ones we bought and we also keep the good ones we received from each other?
If that's it, I really don't see an advantage. We are each giving away the ones we like most and keeping the ones we like less. Also what happens in a group scenario? I'm sure I must have this wrong but that's how it's reading to me.

Like singularity I don't seem to have grasped the gist of the whole thing. Anyway, if I might be so cheeky as to suggest a scheme of my own --- due to my streaming habit I have a wall-full of classical CDs that aren't being used. If anyone would like a boxful (up to 2Kg) as a loaner to have a play with, I can send them some to try for the cost of postage - viz. £2.85. You could specify the sort of thing you might want, or you can leave it to my judgement to give you a potentially interesting variety.

Andrew, Jerry, maybe it's my explanation that is confusing and the above is too wordy to make sense, let's try again: To start: - Choose someone to swap with
- Set a budget (e.g. £50)
- Agree specific or random Genre
Person 1: - Buy as many CDs as possible within budget
- Post to swap partner (Person 2)
- Receive CDs from swap partner
- Listen and enjoy CDs
- The CDs received are now yours to keep and cherish, sell on, give away etc.
Person 2:
- Buy as many CDs as possible within budget
- Post to swap partner (Person 1)
- Receive CDs from swap partner
- Listen and enjoy CDs
- The CDs received are now yours to keep and cherish, sell on, give away etc.

Brilliant Jerry selling CD's by weight No, just covering postage. CDs are loaners and not intended for sale - although a price (probably as a charity donation) might be agreed if the loanee wants to keep some or all of them.

Right, yup, got it (I think). ... Basically, agree a cost with chosen partner and then buy each other CDs. That it?

Doing it that way stops the copyright issues experienced, unlike I must say your idea of lending bulk Classical CDs which unless you sell them to whoever borrows them is very much against the copyright laws

I'm still a trifle confused.
If I send my killer 5 Mantovani and the recipient is less than enamored (a highly unlikely scenario it has to be said, of course). Do I reimburse them and have me Mantovani returned and just keep their Nana Mouskouri?
Anyone up for a Garibaldi & Chocolate Covered Malted Milk exchange?
