Switching to digital, as it's less expensive.

Artificial Intelligence revolution. Here and now.
A Japanese insurance firm has made redundant it's workforce of 30 and replaced them with an AI system. It can do it all: process any type of data input, evaluate claims, issue payments.
MEPs to set guidelines for giving robots rights.
Whatever would me Granny say?

Norway started switching FM radio off yesterday. Switching to digital, as it's less expensive. They were talking about doing that in the UK by now. I'm glad they didn't as there are still so many cars with FM only radios (like mine). Ruth has DAB in her car and all I can say is that it's fine in a good signal area but is a lot less forgiving with poor signals and doesn't have the coverage of FM around the country. What exactly would they save in the great scheme of things? Bit of bandwidth, bit of broadcast power and an extra few bodies? It isn't worth the discussion.

They're hoping to save £19 million annually by replacing old FM equipment that battles supplying signal with fijords and forests.
SD card players appear popular with their motorists loading mp3s and podcasts onto a card.

SD card players appear popular with their motorists loading mp3s and podcasts onto a card. I get that the BBC wants to save money on broadcasting (presumably so it can spend more on champagne for the staff) but I'm not sure how much environmental impact there will be. In my experience DAB radios use significantly more power than FM ones, but maybe that's because my DAB radio is quite old? Multiply that up by a few million radios, add in the cost of trashing millions of FM radios and getting the Chinese to produce millions of DAB ones and it could be quite environmentally costly. My objection to DAB is the relatively poor sound quality. A good FM signal to my ears sounds a lot better than the UK DAB standard, which sounds over compressed and not as detailed. Am I alone in thinking DAB sounds worse than a good FM signal?

Am I alone in thinking DAB sounds worse than a good FM signal? I agree with you completely, Lawrence, and the difference is readily noticable even in the car. I find DAB wearing to listen to and soon switch it off. I can listen to FM all day long.

The planned switchover was announced back in 2011 and Christmas saw record sales of DAB radios.

Don't forget that FM is sent digitally to the transmitters, so it isn't analogue any more. However, I agree that it sounds better than DAB.

3D TV. Another defunct technology.
Manufacturers have called it a day and are ceasing to support it.

I never liked 3D one bit and always thought it was a dead end. Hopefully they'll stop it in the cinema, too.
Now, 4K is the real deal. Just like hi-res audio.

Yesterday it was.
Police took procession of a vehicle when it's owner had some sort of seizure. The police parked the car near their premises, where, it was then spotted by fellow officers and viewed as suspicious, and promtly had it blown up.
Much to the dismay of the owner - I would imagine.

Vegetables being rationed - yes, that's right - at supermarkets.
It's the tip of the iceberg - lettuce.

The Beeb started feeding transmitters (initially Wrotham) using PCM in 1972 www.bbceng.info/Technical%20Reviews/pcm-nicam/digits-fm.htmlThe rest of the BBC network followed soon after. It hasn't been purely analogue for nearly 45 years.
