This time I've put both DXEs into circuit, one at the router end and one by the EtherREGEN. It could be the dual clocking but synergy hits again. This time I can hear an improvement in low level smoothness. I'll listen further tonight. Inside are two Halo Fastjack ethernet sockets with built-in filters.

Hi Martin - have you got a handle on how much benefit the 2nd clock (King I think) on the EtherRegen brings vs just the expensive one on the Mutec?
Cheers. Bill

I'm so close to the sound I've always wanted that I'm left with only Tiny Tweaks™ The first is that I have a set of four very pricy Vishay metal foil trimpots to replace the cermet ones in the LKS DAC. They are in the audio feedback path so it's worth doing since I've already replaced the main I/V resistors with Vishays to great effect, so I'm going for consistency. The second is just a cable experiment. I've been so impressed with my Japanese Canare LV-77S clock cables that I thought I'd try their top of the line DA-206 AES cable. No-one sells it made up in the UK, so I've ordered a 30cm cable using the Canare with Neutrik gold pin XLRs from Ghent, who have a great reputation for cables. It'll have to go some to beat my Wireworld Platinum Eclipse 8 AES cable, but then I like discovering giant killers. Hi Martin - what are your thoughts on the Ghent Audio DA-206 AES XLR cable? Cheers Bill

Hi Bill - it's excellent. Every bit as good as, and I suspect a little more dynamic than, the Wireworld Platinum Eclipse AES that it replaced. The double shielding of the Canare DA-206 attracted my eye and I wanted a short link length as the Mutec sits right on top of the LKS DAC. Ghent have a great reputation and I cannot fault their build quality, with gold pin Neutriks, at all.

Hi Martin - have you got a handle on how much benefit the 2nd clock (King I think) on the EtherRegen brings vs just the expensive one on the Mutec? Yes, see my post here. The more I listen, the more I can hear how powerfully both clocks and both reclockers are doing the 'clean up' job on the incoming data stream, providing ultra-clean input into the DAC. It's definitely better than running just one. The wealth of detail while delivering music in such a smooth and captivating way is giving me sleepless nights!

That’s a pity - I was hoping you’d sell me the King at a good discount!! Cheers Bill

Hah - no chance!
The BG7TBL is now available if you're interested? Great for experimentation and getting into what an external clock can do.

They do lower the noise floor and slightly improve the low level midrange. However, the gradual realisation that they suck the life and vibrancy out of the music made me take them out of circuit yet again. That's better, the musical enjoyment is back again. A worthwhile experiment, but this one is a failure for me and they're staying out.

That's what being on the bleeding edge can do
Sometimes you lose
Net gains for the rest though

Mike, I won't be able to sleep tonight knowing how you suffer with all the awful TAD gear you have, must be terrible for you!

I've had time this long weekend (starting Friday for me) to have a goodly set of listening sessions and appreciate where my system is at. It has, in turn, benefitted from the AfterDark clocks both fully burned in and warmed up (two different things that some people confuse as the same thing) and everything settling from not being touched and the room's heating being left on (thankfully no longer needed).
It's sounding good - very good. The timing is lightning fast, there is a wealth of detail in even standard 16/44 streams, the soundstage is fully defined in good recordings, note decay and ambience are magical, dynamics have real clout and bass is tighter than ever. It's as musical as I've ever heard it.
What's left is the tiniest suspicion of a little clearing up required in the midrange - this only audible now because of the fantastic transparency. For that, I have the last of the mods to do on my LKS DAC and I'm hoping to get on with them tomorrow.
I have 14 x Wima 0.15uF polypropylene PSU bypass caps, 4 x Kemet 33nF polypropylene caps and 12 x 2200pF Vishay foil caps in the analogue post filter, and three sections of self-adhesive ferrite pads to adhere to the relay supply feed tracks. This will be the last of the mods to the LKS.

Well, I wimped out from doing all of it as I was tired after a lot of DIY this weekend. I did manage to add four Wima bypass caps (the orange-pink ones) and four pieces of RFI ferrite shielding (on the right). Early to tell as it's all warming up, but it didn't sound bad at all.
