The Weiliang LPSU powering the router is stock (as opposed to my Coherent upgraded other one powering the AfterDark King). I took to it tonight and upgraded the standard LM-317T regulator for a Texas low noise one and added a couple of WIMA bypass caps. The reservoir caps are Rubycon so I left them alone. I also tweaked the output to 12.5V. It's back in circuit now, burning in overnight so I can have a listen tomorrow. A quick test listen proved that all is well.

I think I heard some improvement in vividness today. Any further system improvements are going to be tiny increments now. However, it proves once again that taking noise out of the digital path improves everything.
I am very happy with the sound I'm getting. Not going to be looking for any step changes from now on.

Inspired by talking to John about grounding boxes - with which I have had great success with my digital components - I'm now looking at applying noise reduction techniques to my incoming house earth. As is increasingly common, my house has PME with Neutral bonded to Earth at the entry point. Therefore, there is plenty of scope for noise intrusion from other properties. I decided (just based on thinking it through) to use a large grounding box in the electrical cupboard very close to the incoming earth and another one close to the hi-fi system. This 3kg SilentPoint will go into the electrical cupboard... While this Aucharm will go behind the system. They have both been shipped so it'll be a race to see which one arrives first from China.

How and where will you connect them Martin ?

Electrical cupboard: there's a big earth multi-way block routing it all over the house with a spare connection.
System: to a spare outlet earth.

Screwed into the block ?
UK mains plug with only earth connected ?

The big one arrives on Monday. I'd better get a couple of brackets in the wall, then.

Large box (SilentPoint): Left FedEx origin facility Tsuen Wan, HK Small box (Aucharm): Departed from regional distribution center Dongguan, China
It's anybody's guess which one will arrive first.

It took about 10 days for mine to arrive which I consider good from China

I'm always patient, I just find the tracking info from China quite amusing.
Will install brackets for the big one by the consumer unit and close to the ground block. I have an old SGS cable I shall convert for the connection.

Yup, very wise. When I order stuff from China I then just forget about it for a few weeks

I've corrected the naming above: the smaller box is the Aucharm, which is quite well known on the net.
Yesterday I prepared an old SGS cable for the consumer unit grounding to the SilentPoint.
Today, I'm preparing another old SGS cable for the behind-system grounding to the Aucharm.

The background to the two grounding boxes arriving shortly are a) some experiments John has been running to ground his mains earth feed; b) my own findings with grounding boxes in my system so far and c) a cable swap I performed a couple of nights ago from basic SGS (green) to super SGS (white), from Mutec to SGS-1s box, which made a very much more significant upgrade to the sound than I was expecting. The latter makes me laugh as I've had that cable lurking in my cable box for a few years!
Whatever the new boxes do, the sound my system is making is superb and I won't be disappointed (much) if nothing improves on it.
This is end game stuff, I don't foresee making any further changes unless another idea comes to me.

I under estimated the SGS cables also for grounding and like you did not use them for a while.

Oooh ! <sound of doors opening> New paradigm even The clue is that I've been pretty quiet here but busy as ever listening to music. I like to keep this blog going and will try and summarise my thoughts on digital systems and grounding when I have a handle on it. I may even update my system diagram!
