Aha another reason for us not to mulch 6 small dogs, 4 close to the ground will bring in lots of clippings That's not how mulching works / what it does ime. We've got two long haired cats, they love to run, roam and roll all over the garden they pick up bark, loose grass etc like crazy, since we got the fine mulcher, instead of a Bosch electric jobbie of the smaller garden, no such problem. We have also avoided bark here, much less mess indoors;)

So maybe the really fine clippings are not easily picked up then.
They bring in all sorts of other stuff. Cue the classic line "You would not believe I just vacuumed in here"

I'm liking the new Hyundai lawn mower.
It can mulch, side discharge or use the grass collector. Not used the built in hose fitting for washing underneath yet.
Electric start and power drive (3 speeds) = ease of use.

Sounds worth a look at least for the future.
Good rep for cars if I have that right

They don't appear to make a sit-on version?

I wonder about the Countax ride on I bought. There are pros and cons to a ride on, especially a wide one. Come and have a go sometime. A smaller walk behind mower can be good for cultivating the zen aspect of mowing a large amount of grass

We already have two petrol walk-behind mowers between us.

Right-o. There is no zen aspect to mowing for me, it's just a job I dislike that has to be done. I currently pay someone else to do it and that's just fine. Frees me up to do more interesting things...

Ah, well a sit on is just as boring, just more expensive Yeah, I didn't want the space loss in workshop and servicing / if something goes wrong - fixing is much more involved. Jacking up, tipping over etc.

Jacking up, tipping over etc. We had a small ride on when we moved in here. It was problematic, unreliable so I thought a larger one to cut faster. Not my best ever buy

We've got quite an uneven soil base to the grass. It's getting better with mulching. I wondered about a roller when it's soft in the autumn. I got side tracked.. Toro do a striping kit for my mower. Trouble is $200 equates to £250 over here?! I also want a scarifier attachment. More on that later.. So I first made a tow bar. .Then I made a roller. Bits of steel tube left overs. Stainless steel bar and the roller tube I bought. Stainless steel tube 4.125" was cheaper than 4" PVC! But of welding, M12 bar as the axel. 50mm thick birch plywood ends. Sand filled. Weighs 16kg. That's more than the Toro one. Here's the lash up. Needs paint but had to test it. Here's the result Someone once said "if you are going to have grass, have a lawn" Next step is to make the end bearing shroud out of plate as it's neater and sticks out less. MKII on the horizon! Perhaps try those tine things that Toro have as they say they comb the blades and it improves the stripes even further. YouTube tests against various makes of roller kits were less conclusive.

I'm happy to just have the grass cut evenly with no weeds, let alone stripes!

I'm happy to just have the grass cut evenly with no weeds, let alone stripes! Yes. Weed free or dampened down at least. Marie was on at me about the clover and clover flowers and it was full of plantains, dandy lions, Thistle etc in just 2 years. I got a knapsack sprayer and suitable weed killer. That made a huge difference. Apparently as the weeds / clover die back they release nitrogen, that and mulching helps the grass be green and strong. Not cutting too short is the other tip. It took a few weeks. I'll spray every year now. As the spray is 1m wide it's as quick to do as cutting it. That's what GreenThumb do, but they charge you 4 times buying the knapsack and several years weed killer, for just one season. They've got to make a living of course but I like doing these things Best time is just before the flowering season starts apparently through to end august. A light scarify in spring. Deeper in autumn. Ours being being new probably doesn't need it this autumn. There's no way I can do it by hand with the scarifier rake we have. Need something that's mower width. That's the next project. You can get tow behind tine ones for small tractors. I'm going to try 2 wide multiple blade type Scarifier rakes and see. No one makes this kind of thing. It's either tiny electric, or max 40cm wide petrol for £600, ££££'s for a pro one and then it's another machine you hardly use.. and gets gummed up. Hiring is another option but the hassle and they are not very wide either. Fun and games.
