I'm surprised no one has talked about lawnmowers.
After many (and I mean many) years, time to retire my old Hayter Hayterette. It cost me £10 in about 1988 and it was a non runner.
I soon got it running, but the Briggs engine was knackered. The agricultural firm I worked for had a Kawasaki KT-43 conversion engine (2 stroke) and that cost me £10 at the end of year clearout sale. That kept the Hayter going till a couple of years ago, when it started playing up and then refused to start.
A old rusted mower with a good engine was got on Ebay, £35, and the engine swapped over, and all was well for a while till the knocking noise started. As I was getting fed up with pushing the mower (no power drive) and having no grass box (mulching mower) something had to be done, so now I've gone and ordered an ex display Hyundai HYM51SPE Electric Start Petrol 4in1 Lawn Mower.
Should be with me on Thursday so I'll update later.
PS I would have prefered a Kubota ride on tractor but it was a bit expensive.

Funny you should mention them, we're looking at having to buy a sit-on one if we move to the house we're hoping for. We have Hayter and Mountfield mowers between us, but both too small for the job.

Not much grass on the rig then, Chris?

Now, this is a surreal lawn mower.

Don't think I'll have one of those, Philip. I may get distracted from the job at hand.

Not much grass on the rig then, Chris? Nope. If only. Sure would take the sting out the work

We've only got 1/2 an acre grassed back garden area and I wanted a walk behind for exercise so got a Torro Timemaster. As big a cut as some ride-ons but without the need to use a smaller mower where you can't get a ride-on in. Takes me 35 mins to cut (I only ever mulch). Neighbour with similar sized grass area wanted the same but his kids got him a ride-on as a birthday present. Takes him quite a bit longer to get the job done than me?! The Timemaster is American made and is proving to be great and has a few interesting features too.

Takes me 35 mins to cut (I only ever mulch). Ok, that's quite persuasive. I'm looking at the benefits of mulching.

Not convinced on mulching. Some say it's perfect others say you can only do it if you cut very regularly. John Deere could be the best as the councils use them

No mulching for me I like things to look tidy , I've got a 19" Honda with rear roller , as well as stripes its easy to go along borders with out the wheels dropping over the edge.

Modern mulchers (well at least the twin bladed Torro Timemaster) do it so finely there is no untidiness or bits on your shoes etc. It is so fine it just disappears. Yes you cannot leave it for a month and expect to mulch, but cut when it needs it to keep looking tidy and its perfect.
The Torro deck features water washing which is neat and keeps things clean.

How about for lazy gits like me that let it get long ? There will still be large amounts of grass for the ground to process and our moss count is already good

You can always put the collector box on remove an insert and off you go Not stopping and emptying a grass box / dealing with a large amount of clippings somehow is a big time saving + you fertilize the lawn for free. If you are really lazy and let it grow up really long, put it on side exit and cut away. You get what you get then...

Not convinced on mulching. Depends on the garden and what the grass is used for I think. Our grass is shaded by trees most of the day and can be mossy so prefer to hoover everything up into the grass box and keep the grass as clear as possible. Also we have dogs and we don't want little bits of mulched grass brought into the house on dogs paws so don't do mulching.
