Nice Gaz. Now you've gone back to it, do you think you've taken a big hit with the sound quality by using the Gyro platter? I think it sounds a little more natural that way, though the Orbe one has other more obvious benefits.

Could do that yeah, would probably look better than what I have. The SoundDampedSteel Isofeet I use though work really REALLY well to isolate the deck on my glass rack. Tried a lot of isolators and these are the best.

I think it sounds a little more natural that way, though the Orbe one has other more obvious benefits. Hey Chris, To be honest I think I've slightly lost something in absolute bass depth and a slightly smaller soundstage, and it would be good to have it back. But...and its a BIG one... Aside from me grinning like a loon everytime I sit back and spin an LP, the Gyro platter has brought more of a bright and breezy character to the deck, with the Orbe platter it sounded a bit dark with some music, the top end never really sparkled the way I'd have maybe liked it to. The guy who "Gorbed" my deck originally went a bit trigger happy with the damping compound under the chassis - I've read over on VinylEngine that you can over-damp a Gyro with this stuff, making it worse case a bit dark and shut in. So that's something I can tweak later if need be. The improvement in PraT and involvement in the music more than compensates for the slight loss in bass depth so all good. These things are usually a trade off I think, good/bad depending on your own preferences. Might not be a problem anyway, theres a 300B valve power amp hitting my system soon, expect that to have more weight and depth than the Mini-T amp doing power amp duties at the minute. So not worried too much about it...all about synergy n such.

It's great you've found a compromise that suits you. Several people have thought me mad for saying that there are things the std. platter gives that are lost with the big one. I got the bass I wanted from my choice of arm - put an Orbe platter in the mix and it just sounds wrong.

Simply gorgeous deck, Gaz, and I rather like your system rack too.

The one I need to put up for sale (although I keep hoping a friend will want it, since its too good for fleabay) Seems odd to me you would want to keep the deck you use & sell on this! Every one got thur reasons i suppose. It's just that i have owned both decks & had that '774' on each aswell.

Is that one of the Clearaudio arms, David? Yes as Mark has said it is a Clearaaudio 12" arm. The story behind it was I had the 12" arm on my master innovation and fancied a tangential arm instead so had the 12" spare. I had just acquired another 401 and send it to Dominic to plinth it and service it etc. I asked him what he though of putting a clearaudio arm on a garrard, I think he laughed out loudly initially. It went on with a bit of a struggle but now it has Doms DH1 cartridge on it too it sounds superb.

I think some of the Clearaudio arms are rather good value and somewhat looked down upon.

Oddly I am somewhat less convinced by their linear trackers, though I don't know that particular one.

Me too, though more in general. No linear tracker has ever wowed me with its sound.
