Hi Chris I originally bought that with a Michell 'Focus' unipivot arm in the early 80's. I bought the SME soon after swapped it out..

What about a Fluid - did you ever have one of those? How did the sound of those two compare with each other?

The Fluid arm is different arm, i used to have one of those on my old 'Hydraulic Ref'. I was not a fan of that, i found it hard to use. The Kite shape head shell does not have a finger lift & the cue mech was a bit heavy handed to use however The ADC block cart i was using was well at home with it being a mega low mass arm.. The Mayware was the only Uni-Pivot i really got on with..

Sorry Chris the counterbalancing is different for both arms.. The 'Focus' arm has Side weights for azimuth setting in addition to the counterbalance. Both arms are nice & open sounding especially in the mid range..

Yes, I know about the side weights. They look like the azimuth adjuster on my Ultracraft, but with muscles!

Gorgeous, Andr'e, I've said it before. For pure looks, I do miss my old Syncro and wish I hadn't sold it.

The aesthetics matter just as much as the sound these days AFAIC. The things I've sold and miss the most are also the most striking to look at and lovely to use.

Goes like this i bought it cheap but some plonker did not pack it correctly & damaged the bearing. Being a Mk.I it uses the same Cruzet motor as my 'Focus One' so all is not lost i got a spare motor out of it. I actually got more for the remaining bits than i paid for the deck..

btw: Martin the original Red Velour type bonded mat has been removed & NOS Slate Audio 5mm Acrylic mat in it's place, i could hear a definite improvement in bottom end straight away by doing this. Also the original spring feet have been replace with bespoke foot extensions, again an improvement.All really left to do is a new captive mains cable & a New lid, these were noutorious for falling to bits. i managed to source someone who can make one just as original with mitred joints {propar way to make lids}

Just got back into vinyl so went with the Pro ject Elemental to test the waters. Enjoying it so far, when I get chance to sit down for an hour and listen. May upgrade in a year or two if I'm still enjoying it.

The bonded suede mat on my Strathclyde, which I must still sell, is all perished. I wonder if I can get it off, as it looks terrible, and replace it with a new mat?

Those 'Focus' bonded mats are stuck on with a self adhesive film. They come off but leave to odd area of glue on the Aluminium platter. Dead easy to get off tho with paint stripper, but do not use anything abrasive to wipe the sticky glue off.. i left the stripper to do it's business then used a pot washing sponge to wipe the crap off, re applied stripper, then again wiped off till it was all gone.When done i just washed it down with soapy water.. The platter is then nice & shiny. A quick polish up with fine metal polish, jobs a good un. I just sat the mat on top then, a few bit of thin two sided tape to hold the mat in place so it does not slip.. Those mats are high quality & are different to other Acrylic mats. Ones you generally buy have had the centre where the label sits machined out which looks a mess basically showing machining marks. These mats have had the centre completely machined out & a thinner Acrylic section close precision fitted so it is perfect. Dunno what that Phantom black spot is underneth the clamp but it's not on the mat

Are they official Michell mats, Andr'e, or did you get it elsewhere?

Very nice. How does it compare to the ropey old overpriced tat that it's sitting next to?(!!) (....joke, but a serious question)
