Johnnie's the go-to guy when it comes to all things tonearm Tim. Read the feedback on his site and some of the turntable kit he has improved...SME V's you name it.
Wood Veneer will look great on yer Rega!

Final update, Michell's finally done. Had the tonearm rewired by Audio Origami, big improvement over standard technoarm wiring. Original as I bought it: Clear double spider plinth...Nope, too much bling! once you go black you never look back... MODS: * New springs and belt, re-oiled the main bearing. * Black spring covers and armboard, Orbe black double spider and feet, from Michell. * Technoarm rewire from Audio Origami. * Car bodyshop respray of main subchassis silver to black STILL TO DO: * Go to MC cartridge sometime in the (hopefully near) future * Clean and reo-oil bearing with Audio Origami PTFE turntable oil kit * Upgrade to Orbe Tacho motor unit if possible. * Replace Firebottle phono stage switch mode psu with linear hardwired to balanced mains unit All good, should be fun and improve things as I go along. Spent a fair bit of time tonight redoing setup after fitting rewired tonearm, spring bounce, cable dressing, VTA spot on, everything absolutely level. My Firebottle Plus phono stage is opening up nicely... Well worth the effort and expense - blown away by the sound, vinyl is great Shame Michell don't sell the black Orbe motor unit separately, but hey ho. Big chunk of the way there.

Wood Veneer will look great on yer Rega! If I don't cock it up, never veneered anything before but it looks straightforward enough with modern veneers and glue - my woodworking days were at school, but I'm such a fuss arse stuff turned out OK, so fingers crossed. Lots of great YouTube help out there too

Look forward to seeing it done Tim. Do us all proud and don't splash the glue about too much!

Had a thought Tim about veneering the Rega? From (vague)memory of owning one back in the day, the bottom of the Rega subplatter gets pretty close to the top of the plinth surface? Would the extra thickness of the veneer cause any clash issues? Just thinking out loud a bit.

Would the extra thickness of the veneer cause any clash issues? Good point Gary, I did ponder this actually, not so much for the thickness but would it change the sound of the deck? Popular opinion seems to be that the Planar 3 plinth sounds better than a lot of the others due to it's increased depth. Anyhoots, I might paint it first off, as getting the veneer right would be a false investment if I move it on quickly - still thinking on that one? The veneer is only 0.6mm thick so not too much and I guess I could always use a spacer to raise the bearing, if the sub-platter was too low. Given me more to think about now . . . . doh!

Can you not just leave the bit in the middle with no veneer? You'll not see it.

Probably going to send my RB300 to Johnnie and the yellow Planar is going to get a nice wood veneer. !!! !!! Just had to register to urge you not to do it! Those original bright coloured Regas are worth a good bit more than the plain black ones - saw a similar yellow Planar 3 for for £280 on ebay last time I looked (with arm) whilst a similar black one (still with arm) might fetch only £90. OK, Planar 3s seem to vary greatly in price anyway, but coloured ones definately sell for more. Sell it then do what you like to a common old black one which you've paid less for (and keep the difference). - Sam

Going back to Tim's height problem, if the bearing is attached to the plinth on top of the veneer, it will be fine, will it not? Make sure the area below the arm mounting is treated the same though.

Going back to Tim's height problem, if the bearing is attached to the plinth on top of the veneer, it will be fine, will it not? Indeed it would, as the height would be the same . . . doh! Regarding the yellow plinth, it's in very poor condition with chips, scratches and bits of yellow missing, so I very much doubt it has any value due to it's colour. It would need a lot of work by a purchaser to get it back to being acceptable. All the edges are chipped and the motor retaining holes were damaged (seized screws) whilst removing the motor - so it needs to be restored, which is why I got it so cheap. Thanks for the heads up though Sam, but it's in much worse condition than the picture shows

Maybe that's fair enough then. Although still maybe you'd get £60 for it and you could search out a similar poor condition black one for £20 Do spend a lot of time searching out the perfectly bad black one though or you might pay over the odds.. lol.
