A new multi volume set of Stokowski recordings from Urania, released a couple of days ago.
Most aren't linked to Leopold Stokowski as an Artist on Spotify but are findable if 'Stokowski' is searched for.
A good old fashioned Vivaldi T4S here, with the venerable Hugh Bean as soloist, spatially the stereo is a bit ping pong with the soloist positioned to the far left.
In its way it can stand head high with today's recordings imo.

I still haven't settled on my favourite 4S - I've still got a number of newish recordings on Spotify to get through.
I was very impressed by Harnoncourt's early recording on period instruments - it had wonderful character and sound quality on DMM vinyl. Sadly it doesn't appear available on Spoti.

This is a very idiosyncratic period performance and what I've heard so far has been enthralling.
Apparently they used an exceptional sound engineer so I need to hear it on my system to assess.

Enjoying Anne Akiko Meyers with the English Chamber Orchestra in excellent form atm. Lively but not frenetic. Nicely individualistic expression. Soulful in the slow sections. Good full bodied recording. Definitely up there with the best imo.

It's the way she pushes and pulls the dynamics and speed - not overdone, but not something I've heard as successful as this.

Glorious, just glorious. Do yourself a favour, pay your 12.50 and catch the 4S stream from the Barbican that finishes on Tuesday I think. It really does take you to Venice and back again. Authenticity, tone and timbre, it's all there in spades ... www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2021/event/vivaldis-four-seasons-live-from-the-barbicanI now have a deeper appreciation for this master work. Firstly, it was broadcast showing subtitles with the narrative - what an absolutely inspired idea! The sheer majesty and inspired invention of Vivaldi's imagery really comes to life in sharper focus. I also have a deeper appreciation of Rachel Podger, such a fierce and fearless performer. She plays for her life, as if it's the one and only time she'll be playing it. Watching it live and seeing the level of technique required is always an educational treat. And of course, stellar support from the ever wonderful AoAM.

Oh dear, I listened to Winter first, my favourite season. Talk about contrived, with loud harp in the opening, pushing and pulling of timing and crescendi, and other orchestral irritations along the way.
If this is an attempt to gain attention, it got mine for all the wrong reasons.
Not for me at all.

Decca just can't resist can they. No doubt they will be plugging him like crazy to Classic FM etc Being able to play the notes and have the range of techniques is one thing but I wonder what time they would have spent discussing and analysing historic / contemporary recordings of T4S, and also looking at all the details in the narrative that the soloist and orchestra need to deliver. There have been some fine new versions in recent years but only those who are willing to go the extra distance need apply IMO. I much prefer a HIP recording with period instruments but that's just my personal taste. I wonder how soon he'll be recording the Beethoven.

I will give another listen with more attention to it, to see what I think.
