For some reason I really don't get tired of this work, as some have done. I guess I don't hear it that often, but when I do, I always find something new in it to enjoy. And then there's the performance side to it as well - to hear this work performed live by a really talented ensemble is quite something to behold. Last Friday's performance in Manchester by La Serenissima really confirmed for me that it is one of the great 'master works' of all time - it's so worth making the effort to hear this work live. It's such an intense experience, it manages to be moving and an adrenaline rush all at the same time. The melodic invention is quite wonderful and somehow the composer manages to maintain this throughout the work. I particularly love the interplay between the violins and then there's the solo violin which is such an expression of the art that it requires an absolute virtuoso to helm the work and give it the fullest expression. I recently acquired the sweet sounding all analogue recording on Fone Records with the ever excellent Salvatore Accardo but it certainly won't be the last recording I own. I'm still looking to acquire the BIS recording that Martin T introduced me to some time ago but keep getting outbid on ebay on the rare occasion that a vinyl copy comes along. I would also like to get the old Neville Marriner recording on Argo that was held the benchmark for a number of years. So yes, it's going to be more, not less Four Seasons for me in the future!!

You'd probably enjoy Vivaldi's musical drama L'Olimpiade as well. The 4 Seasons music makes star appearances, with vocal accompaniment! I have highlights CD ... For example, track 3 on this ....> Also available on more recent recordings. On LP as well ... Here's the full deal ... and on YouTube ...

Thanks Jerry, looks excellent and will be checking this out for sure ...
Are you familiar with the bassoon concertos? These were a revelation for me when I heard them performed last week!

Yep, the bassoon concertos are amazing, aren't they! I'm not sure Viv knew how to write boring music. This thread has started a minor Vivaldi revival for me.

I love the Drottningholm baroque ensemble version. I bought the cd back in the day. Used to pass by the church in Stockholm where it was recorded. The use of the church organ for bass accompaniment is especially pleasing and the timbre of the baroque instruments.

It's certainly my favourite.
I do have the Marriner/Argo on vinyl, it was my first classical purchase.

Fone version is excellent but i would not delay getting a copy as they only press 496 copies as they use One-Stage Pressing Process & they never repress Sacd version is excellent as well
BIS verson if i can get orders for 500 copies will get these to market
Also like the Divox remastered by AudioNautes 45rpm version Le Quattro Stagioni : 4 Seasons : Giuliano Carmignola
45rpm Direct to disc chasing the dragon is another top class version
a 4
Vivaldi – Le Quattro Stagioni – The Four Seasons – Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca & Giuliano Carmignola

I like the solo violin on that Carmignola recording - very fierce! Played at a slightly higher tempo too ...
I should add that the Fone recording is very good value for money compared to some, especially for what is an all-analogue affair. I will be keeping an eye on their catalogue for future releases.

I've got hold of the Fone Records Four Seasons. It's even better than I'd hoped so thanks Jules for mentioning it. It's played so beautifully. This is going to be played a lot. I thought I'd exhausted my Four Seasons appetite. This really is a great recording. If I could only play one record this might well be it.

Here's the Four Seasons as you've never heard it before, and as you're never likely to hear again courtesy of maestro Uli John Roth!

At last my BIS vinyl recording of 4 Seasons has landed!
Took forever by surface mail from Canada but was super cheap so can't complain.
Looks to have arrived in very nice condition so will do a shoot out with the Accardo version and post results ...
