The Four Seasons for 2 pianos, anyone?

Just for Jerry I'm onto the Four Seasons again ... I do have a reason though ... My son has just been given the Largo from 'Winter' to learn. It's a *very* proud moment for me to hear him playing Vivaldi. I was asked by his teacher to find some different versions for him to listen to and we did this on YouTube. Always an interesting experiment! 1. Gil ShahamThis sounds like it could have been played by anyone to me. Totally devoid of character and inspiration for me. Nul points from the London jury. 2. Nigel Kennedy
Now this is much better. Restrained and dignified, with a lovely sense of poise and flow. Sweet toned without being saccharine. 3. A-S MutterOh dear, I do love Ms Mutter at her best, but this isn't good at all. The slow tempo just doesn't work for me and makes the heavy vibrato sound even more cloying. Just feels completely inappropriate for this baroque masterpiece. 4. Itzhak PerlmanThis I like a lot. Mannered and idiosyncratic in the best way - understated, regal and aristocratic, with a fine sense of the Baroque to my ears. The restrained vibrato adds a hint of sweetness instead of detracting. I'll have to listen to some more of the work to see if it's another purchase!

It's OK, Julian, a proud dad earns an honourable exception to my "enough already" attitude to the 4S. It must be very special to see / hear your littl'un start to get to grips with music of this calibre.

I'm now veering off on a tangent to find an ensemble version of the '4' without a big name soloist, that is played on period instruments. And it needs to be on vinyl of course ... any suggestions? There are three mentioned here - www.classicalnotes.net/classics/vivaldi.htmlSimon Standage and the English Concert conducted by Trevor Pinnock (Archiv) Academy of Ancient Music led by Christopher Hogwood Concentus Musicus Wein (1976 Das Alte Werke LP set) Nikolaus Harnoncourt (whose wife Alice played the solos)

Hogwood gets my vote. It's very good. Harnoncourt is typically strange (imo!) and Standage fails to inspire me.

Thanks Jerry.
I know I said I would steer clear of star violinists but there is a new Janine Jansen version on Decca with period instruments that looks interesting. I will investigate...

Ah, I'll have a listen on Spot ...
A very close encounter with t4S !! A small group of soloists, really. Very different to the sweeping swathes of orchestral sounds often encountered.

Richter's 'reimagining' is well worth a listen.

Gentlemen, in order to spare poor Jerry from his manifest mental anguish and impending breakdown over T4S, we will restrict further informed discussion by the elite and learned lovers of this masterpiece, to this here thread. What I've done is to merge together 2 previous threads on the subject to form this 'superthread'. I thank you.

Well done, Jules. In case anyone hasn't heard it, this is my all-time favourite performance (it also won a Gramophone award) by The Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble and wonderfully recorded by BIS. open.qobuz.com/track/1840132

I do love that as a performance as you know Martin, but on both vinyl and streaming I find the recording a little too 'forward' for my preference - I can't get carried away with cranking the volume on it!

I've been to the church where it was recorded, using the church organ for bass. I don't do religion, but as a recording studio the church was great 😉
Tapped horns do those low tones very nicely - track 10 winter I believe is the one.

I get what you say Jules. I’m listening to it at the moment. It has more bite than many versions. The 300Bs I have in play currently are probably a good foil for the balance. ‘Tis good.

That organ continuo is magnificent in parts, but the lead violinist is extraordinary.
