And still going strong!

Decided I'm going to put a roll of film through my Olympus Trip 35mm I bought years ago. The camera looks in very nice condition so let's see what it can do. As used by David Bailey of course ... :D Excellent! Brace yourself though - have you seen the price of film lately? There are a lot of pricing antics on the internet, so shop around a bit, Jules and watch what postage price you'd be paying before you commit yourself to buying.

Yes it was quite a shock to see some prices! Was the first time I had looked in many a year, but looks like a trip to Boots in Piccadilly Circus will sort me out when I'm next down town.

I'm a bit insulated from the cost, as I bulk load and I bought a fridge a couple of years ago which is now stuffed to the gills with film, but it's going to hurt when I have to buy some more.

Of course the danger is I enjoy this and then get a hankering for a 1970's SLR.
Or I could maybe dust off my old Nikon F601 but think I'd prefer something more retro without the electronics etc

That could well be better in the long run, Jules. Mechanical stuff can always be repaired - electronics, not so much.

Good point Chris!
The Nikon is way too big and heavy for my liking anyway ...

My travel size Nikon DSLR will be staying with me for a while. In fact I will be investing in it further with a lens upgrade soon I hope, before trips in the summer. I wonder how this announcement will affect used DLSR kit prices?

Well I guess we'll have to wait to see how true that turns out to be. Certainly Nikon only make 5 models of DSLR with the D850 having a full-frame sensor with about 46 MP. Their professional model though, the D6, has only a 20.8 MP sensor, but in every other way is faster and more robust and reflects what those that use this format professionally value most. So I find this prediction a bit difficult to believe. However, it would not surprise me if they only retained a couple of models, to satisfy professional use and those wanting a high resolution in 35 mm SLR format. They only rarely update their professional-level models (the D6 was launched in 2020 and the D5 in 2016, also with the 20.8 MP sensor) and these have always favoured build, handling and speed over resolution. If you need higher resolution for professional use you'd go to a larger format (or maybe Canon, if you were desperate! ). At work we mainly use Nikon D810 models when we want something with a 35 mm format, but in the field we either use one of our original D3 bodies (12 MP) or, if we need a bit more resolution a D3x (24 MP). Like the D5 and D6, the D3 is robust in the extreme and well sealed against dust and moisture and are a joy to use: no diving down through menus, everything you really need is on the body. And, being Nikon, every F-mount lens ever made will fit and work, including specialised medical and UV lenses. We do have a few mirrorless cameras; Sony Alpha, Leica L and a couple of Panasonic MFT models, but these are usually used tethered which avoids having to remember where in the menus the function you want is buried! I couldn't actually tell you where the Panasonic models are and the others have been rigged to particular lenses and instruments rather being used for 'conventional' photography (I have just bought a modified Sony RX0 II for something similar). When we need higher resolution we switch to either medium format (Hasselblad with PhaseOne backs and a Pentax 645Z - bought S/H 'cos it was a bargain!) or large format with a PhaseOne back, often tethered. The only time I would choose to use something without a 'real' viewfinder would be to shoot video and even then I would fit a decent external viewfinder on rather than the one on the camera. It is also telling that the mainstay of the professional medium format market (PhaseOne, Hasselblad and Leica S) all use optical finders and with both the PhaseOne and Hasselblad systems having detachable / alternative units available, even waist-level options. So, let's see.

Interesting article, but time will tell.
My history with cameras is quite varied, using 35mm colour and B&W film in a canon AE1 I think it was, then a more modern film canon body (cant remember the model), then onto a Canon D10 DSLR, from then I stopped using 35mm film, but carried on using large format film 8x10 and 4x5 on cambo cameras, I was also using Canon 1DS, 1D body's along with a host of L series lenses upto and including the 600mm f4, shooting wildlife and surfing events. my photography diverified and I was using Phase One P30+ & p65+ DB on 645AF with leaf shutter lenses, Hasselblad H1D - H3D etc, Cambo Wide DS with Phase one P65+ DB, and going through the Canon 1Dn2, 1Ds3, 1Dx etc. After all my photography work, getting my 1st Class Honours Degree in Photography and starting my printing and framing business I decided to take a break from commercial photography and Just bought a Leica M9 for my personal use, this then turned into a Leica SL and lastly a Leica SL2-S with a Leica 35mm F/2 APO summicron ASPH lens and a few spare batteries which I just love, I dont have any inclination to get anything else. IF i did get anything else it would have to be a Cambo Wide DS with a Phase one DB and a 35mm lens, I really missed this combo and the resolution available from it, but the Leica SL2-S is an outstanding camera, with probably Leicas best ever lens on it....Happy days.

Ah yes the AE-1 - a fabulous thing.
My wife used one for years and took some wonderful images.
I have just found some very old rolls of Fujifilm in my bedroom, both bw and colour, so will try these out in the Olympus Trip. Not much of a gamble to get one developed just for fun!

So this afternoon I successfully loaded an old reel of Fuji Superia and headed off with my son to one of my favourite nearby locations, the gorgeous Hampstead Pergola. Managed to shoot half the roll in dreadfully flat light but at this point I just want to find out if the camera is working and whether I'm getting the preset focuses correct. I must say it's very annoying when you forget to take lens cap off!! I'll try and finish off the rest this week and get it sent off ...

My go to camera for the last 8 years has been my Nikon D850. But this will be my new landscape photo gear for the foreseeable future! Fujifilm GFX100S

Congrats, and what are the lenses?
Do you think the Fuji has a different "character" in terms of imaging to the Nikon?

Thanks! The 2 dedicated lens are the 20-35 and 17mm. (These equate in DSLR equivalents as 16-30 and 14mm) I just got these so haven't taken a single shot yet. I'll keep you posted!
Note - I also got a Nikon to Fuji adapter, so I can try to use some of my Nikon glass even though there will be some vignetting.

If you can be bothered it might be cool to do some test shots of the same frame but with the two different camera bodies.
