I have a pair and a spare of these exceptionally 'musical' Armstrong A10 MKII amplifiers circa 1957, Quality Partridge OPT's Woden mains and a Ted Rule 12watts circuit from a pair of EL34's produce an Hybrid almost EL84/EL34 presentation, free photo upload

My latest amp. A bit of a powerhouse. A Champ One, made by Belgian pro company APart as their first amp aimed at the audiophile market. 300wpc into 8 ohms. Look at the way the faceplate fits into the side heatsinks! Beautifully done. It sounds very good. Needs judicious matching with speaker cables - good with XLO but a tad dry in the treble with Townshend.

I like that chunky looking passive pre ...
How do you find the A40s compared to your Quads?

Only had the A40s for a couple of days so still experimenting but they compare very favourably with my Quads. You really wouldn't think they were only 40 watts, they're very capable units. The pre is by Hifi Hangar, got a used one off the bay for a good price.

It is & I was just looking for a reasonably priced passive pre to go with the A40s when this came up on ebay. Found a review - www.hifihangar.co.uk/hifi-choice-review.html (I assume they use the same pot in the 2 input version which is the one I've got)

Thanks, Roy. I had no idea it had been reviewed. I'll pass the info on. I'm guessing my mate will be looking for something more like 48 steps but you never know.

Musical Fidelity more like !
I believe the top (heatsink) gets so hot it can toast bread.
I aspired to one many years ago, but so far I've not even heard one, but they were supposed to sound good.

What are you using for speakers with the A1 Shane? Was using a pair of ''1985 vintage'' Linn Kans, Chris. But unfortunately they had to be returned. (Tweeter problem) Just awaiting for my refund, and now currently looking out for another pair. S.

Keep an eye out for the Sony SS176 - they seem to partner well with MF gear. Had my eye on a B200 for a while - nice amps.
