Money Saving Expert - A good site to look over for all sorts The TV programme I just watched Martin said it could be better to by outright, not rent which surprised me. The argument being you are borrowing money from the mobile phone co. Link below for you to look over www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/mobile-phone-cost-cuttingIf you want to check for a better deal as well this is the place to go

Bought 2 off iPhone 6 outright. Then separately a Tesco SIM only, the other on a Virgin SIM only.
They work fine anywhere including New York and Washington DC and France of course.

Are you talking to me or about another Martin?
I've bought my last four phones outright and have an O2 SIMplicity 4G contract. It's the only way I'd ever go now - buy the phone and have a SIM-only contract.

Never had a rental contract phone - always bought 2nd hand (cuts the cost even more) and used PYG sims until recently when I got a cheap pay monthly SIM deal from Virgin Doesn't take much to work out the maths

Agreed re buy the phone and go SIM only.

I have a monthly rental contract but then again that it primarily because I am lazy and went for the first thing that they offered... it is also officially in my wife's name as an addition to her contract as I used to rarely use it due to always having a company phone of some sort.

Almost all my friends have bought their phones now, new and used. You can buy a guaranteed iPhone 4x for peanuts, pop a £10 sim in it and get everything you need and a great camera too.

I've lost count of the phones I have had and the only contract I had was way back when you had no other choice and it was a Panasonic brick. I always buy an unlocked handset only, I keep the box and when I upgrade I sell it on eBay, getting good money for them. Contract phones cost a fortune, I just did the maths

Our case is, Marie and I have Microsoft 640's. Not a premium phone but something that is pretty capable and certainly does what we need of a phone / device.
I looked on Uswitch this morning and their recommended deal PAYG sim is £10 a month. For that you get 500 mins, unlimited texts, and 1GB data.
We get the 640, 300 mins, 5000 txts and 1GB data for £9.50 a month.
I've never used up all the 300mins in a month - even moving house and that needed a lot of calls, and use about 100txts if I'm lucky:) Data use us never an issue as wifi helps out at home etc.
We did boost the data last month (£7 for extra GB) as with no broadband after our move we used our phones tethered (sharing in Microsoft speak) so we could surf on our laptops etc over H+ - not a too bad experience TBH. Could do most things and even stream TennisTV (although it was the off season with no live matches). We now have nice fast fibre and which is great.
As an aside one experience we have is, the Microsoft (read Nokia) RF solution whoops Iphones and the Androids we've tried in this more rural environment and this is certainly a blessing here! With same network (apples and apples) the latter simply refuse to work on calls and data at all in some areas in and around of our home, not so the Nokia HW, they just get on with it where ever.

My findings, too. My Lumia 950 is remarkable for hanging in there even when the signal shows one bar. Our office is notorious for being surrounded by thick walls and having precious little mobile signal. The Apples of my colleagues struggle, my phone just keeps on working.

Nokia phones have always excelled at that. Only ever had three brand's, 1 Panasonic, countless Nokia phones and the Motorola which arrived yesterday.

Vodafone have a sale on at the moment and I've just signed up for their 4g sim only 'Red' deal which is unlimited calls and texts and 2GB of data for £15.30 (10% off the normal £17). If you are prepared to go to £18 a month you get Spotify premium free for 6 months.
I've decided to ditch Spotify for now and use Mix Radio (really good app that produces playlists based on three artists that you select, but not just limiting to those artists).

I have the same 4G sim deal at £15.30.
My wife has a pay monthly phone deal which is £21 for a Samgsung S5 Neo, it's not unlimited minutes but it's easily plenty; it was a Black Friday deal.

Those are good deals; I'm on O2 SIMplicity (2GB, unlimited calls & texts) for £21. Time I look at their website again as the prices are always coming down....
...just looked, seems like I can change to 3GB and drop to £20. Might do that.
