So the answer overall is somewhere between investigate and do not investigate?

I think ultimately you have to try it for yourself, Guest. Either listen to someone else's or see if you can do a trial or sale-and-return.

Well you're unlikely to get a unanimous view about any subject on an audio forum! What is it apart from the look and the price that attracts you to it?

I'd like to throw in a tentative vote on the contrary side.
Some of those cheap'n'cheerful Chinese amps can sound pretty darn good. I can't recall what the make or model was now, but Stu ("Russ Abbot" on the Wigwam forum) had something similar and was very pleased. He even demmed it at the Wigwam's Scalford Show and there was nowt wrong with the sound at all, quite impressive, in fact. It was widely praised as a fine sounding and looking piece of kit.
Yaqin make some good stuff. Personally, I'd give it a go.
Is this it?
Cor .... it looks fab, imo
I have to agree, I used to have a Huge KT88 Yaqin amp, jerry I'm sure I bought it from you via AoS? I may be wrong. It was a very very good amp, and Yaqin have quite a following, if I wasn't such an upgrade fanatic it would have been a long term keeper. i liked the KT 88 so much that I bought another, Anthony from Tube Distinctions heavily upgraded a few of these amps and sold them as a AoS branded amp, it was again even better than the stock model. I know nothing of the model in question, but I would say go for it, but make sure it is suitable for UK mains, as my house has a constant 250v

Now this is why I'm asking on here. I know nothing about valves. I'm listening to a lot of classical and single vocal and thought I would like to play with them. Just not confident enough to buy without a bit of advice you see.

That was the one I had, it was a cracker. The width of the amp was no problem but it was quite deep, I put it on the top shelf of my rack. For 500 notes I doubt if you could get a better valve amp, if you search on AoS you will probably find white a few threads about this amp and different people upgrading it , make sure you are aware of any import duties.

The EL84 produces a smooth, rather sweet sound allegedly and they are easy to tube roll. The Russian equivalent (the 6P14P) is good value and comes in all price variety. Even standard EL84s are pretty cheap - just look on eBay for a quad of them. Get a listen first of all to the standard tubes, get the amp modded up a bit the tube roll it for best performance. I think they would suit your listening choices well. Quite fancy an el84 amp myself but just cannot justify it! Do you not fancy the AN Kit amp I linked to? As for "better" valves - that's for you to decide. They all do things differently so there's no clear answer!!
If you are ever near Edinburgh feel free to noise me up for a listen to mine.

I have written to the China Company that is advertising them and asked for dimensions Sovereign. It tells you everything else and the output seems respectable. I'm assuming I can use better valves when I fancy an upgrade, thank you very much for the advice.

I think you are right Chris, a smooth sweet sound is exactly what I am after. I've discovered a lot of recordings of single voice have sibilance if your equipment is a tad lean, so that's exactly what I am trying to do. What's a tube roll? As far as a kit goes, I'm out of my depth at present, maybe owning valves would give me a bit more confidence over time? Lovely of you to offer, but I am well south of your location, but thanks anyway.

I'm suspecting it's because it's not the usual 43 x 11 x 31?!

EL84 amps are hard to get very wrong. I have 3 on my upper channels in 5w SET form, and very balanced, dynamic and detailed they are too. I use the Russian long life military tubes. Great sound and last and last.
