A few years ago I was lucky enough to get tickets to see Golden Earring. I went to the concert, to discover that the support act were another dutch band I had never heard of, ironically they were introduced as, "The Second best band in Holland"! Obviously this did not bode well for Golden Earring, as it was assumed by all that the best band was Focus and this meant by inference that Alquin were regarded better than Golden Earring. They commenced their set and launched into lengthy Jazz-rock fusion pieces that were clearly superior to Golden Earring's catalogue. What was particularly impressive was that after each track, most of the members swapped places and instruments!! I was instantly hooked and now have every album they have ever made. The Mountain Queen remains my favourite however because, that night they performed the whole thing note perfect and it is a very groovy record.

Thanks for this roxbrough, not a band I'd ever heard of. Good jazz-rock (like Jean-Luc Ponty) I do enjoy. Playing this now.

Tenuous Zappa connection there in track 5! And John Mayall. Actually, that's the track that finally gets this album off the ground for me (it's a cover of the It's A Beautiful Day track from Marrying Maiden) as it segues into the final track. Not the greatest prog album in the world, but it's not half bad either.

I enjoyed it. It's a good bit of progressive rock. Now what does "A splendid addition to the genre'." mean, and why the misuse of the Apostrophe(*)?

I'd say that would be the first option Alan.

Thanks for the introduction to this band - had never heard of them before.
Not really much of a prog fan but there were parts of this that I enjoyed more than others. I gave it two stars - probably something I would enjoy more live to appreciate some of the musicianship more.

I've never owned a copy but I know it a little because a friend liked it and played it a lot. I'd completely forgotten about it to be honest, so welcomed the opportunity to hear it again after so many years. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would (i.e. quite a lot), so I'll be playing it again. 4 out of 5 from me.

Having just been invited to a planned classical version of this album of the month concept I thought I'd look in for the first time and see how it works.
Listening to the Alquin album now. Never heard of them before. Bit irritating at times - not that keen on their vocals but like a fair amount of the instrumental. Mmm ... no, I don't think I'll be revisiting this band, so I guess I'll vote 1.
Damn, I clicked on 3 by mistake. Can't seem to change it now. Interesting that the OP doesn't give the opportunity for saying it's a lousy album and I don't like it, just that I don't understand it!

This one would be more up yer alley, Jerry! The threads are kept open, so comments may continue beyond the designated month.

I have wider tastes than 'just' classical.
