Excellent. Swapped them round with standmount Tannoys in the living room and they are proving very good. They work well with th TV/media player and sound excellent on the end of my el34s. My next plan is to use my super duper speaker cable with them and I think that'll lift them just a bit more. They're a good size as well so not too obtrusive. All in all - delighted. Funny you should draw a comparison between Tannoy and Sony................. I've just bought a pair and will collect them later this week. The cabs remind me of my recently sold JPW Sonata bookshelf speakers. They don't look like they were built by Tannoy. JPW made some fine speakers and the cabinets were expertly made in a prison, or prisons, at her majesty's pleasure. They easily pass the knuckle-wrap test and you wouldn't want to drop one on your foot. Oh and stop swapping cables, it doesn't make any difference.

Is it the EBs you got TIU? There's a gold plate on the back that tells you.
Hopefully you like them!

I don't think so Chris - I haven't collected them yet but the pics on ebay show they are the regular version. What difference(s) do the EBs have?

Yeah Mike it is. The 176 was a collaboration between Sony Japan and Sony Uk whose headquarters is in Brooklands. The speakers were aimed at the UK ear and are very, very good. Trying to find better details on the differences....

Can't make the link here work but you get the idea ; Sony SS-176E Small floor-standing, reflexloaded loudspeaker using two drive units. A joint effort between Sony UK and the Japanese HQ, it has a balance which suits European ears well. Positioned at about 60cm from the rear wall, it offers a nice forward projection with excellent detail. Bass inevitably lacks ultimate extension and weight but at the price it represents remarkable value for money and is heartily recommended. Dimensions 755 x 216 x 290mrn Price £199 Review 7/96 www.gramophone.net/Issue/Page/Ju ... 19/751646/ Type Two-way bass reflex Drive units 160mm woofer, 25mm tweeter Frequency range 35Hz-20kHz Crossover frequency 25kHz Sensitivity 88dB for 1 Watt at 1 metre Nominal impedance 6 ohms Power handling 50-90 watts Dimensions (W x H x D) 216 x755 x 290mm Weight 12kg www.audioreview.com/cat/speakers/floorstanding-speakers/sony/ss-176e/prd_121069_1594crx.aspxFound a short bit on the differences as well. If your after ugly speaker which deliver a smooth sound look no further than a set of Sony SS-176E or SS-176-EB (The brooklands editions come with brass fittings, an extra plinth on the bottom and different bass drivers). They were award winners back in the day and both my brother and I own a pair. Great sound from a pair of ugly black boxes.

They're not at their best with that thick cable - much better with the yellow stuff the jumpers are made from. Brighter and quicker I found.
must get round to changing that

Thanks Chris. My pair are definitely the standard edition. When searching google images I saw some finished in a nice wood veneer - they looked much better than the black. A clean, uncluttered look like the Spendor A6. Looking forward to hearing mine, they are available for collection now. Was the release year 1996?

It was around then TIU but I'm not exactly sure. Add your thoughts on them to this thread after you've heard them. The wood veneer must be a custom finish as they only came in black.

I pick them up next Monday evening. I'm hoping a mate can have a look at them to see if they're worth tinkering with or kept as they are. Often gear is best left alone.
I see there's another pair on ebay priced on a BIN at £75.50. He'll be lucky to get that.

There will always be people who think they'll attract the gullible. Like the German ebayers who list Sony ES gear for twice or three times as much as its true worth. I do wonder if they ever get a sale.

I collected the 176Es yesterday. They were described as all the drivers in perfect undamaged condition but there was a split in one of the dust caps. I tried gluing it but it looked a mess so I cut it off and will buy a replacement. They sound ok, nothing special to my ears, just good regular speakers.

Bit annoying. Hopefully they work out for you. I hooked them up to a wee Sony amp but would like to hear them with one of the meaty ones - say a TAF940.

I've ordered a plastic dust cap and a small bottle of glue from Good Hifi in the Netherlands. If I can remove the old glue ok it should be a straightforward replacement. It won't look exactly the same as the other cap because of the separate outer seal Sony used on the originals.
I now have Q Acoustics Concept 20s on Custom Design RS304 stands and the Sony's side by side so will have decide which to keep. I do like the extra bass weight the Sony's give but they aren't as crisp and accurate as the small but perfectly formed Concepts.
