Yes, interesting - do they have a good rep? A big fan on that, though. Noisy?

OMG I want it - ticks all my retro boxes ... If it was 649, not 6499 I would have it!

Yes, interesting - do they have a good rep? A big fan on that, though. Noisy? I'd heard they are seriously good, but it was a long time ago. The build is very solid. My only experience of a fan was the ksa50, but that one was silent. I guess it's less of a deal for me because I don't listen to classical and so the music tends to drown out such things.

Yes, the quieter bits in classical can be a real pain.

It pretty much rules out the car for classical listening, for me at least.

An ARC SP6 - it's what evolved into the SP8, one of which has been in my system for almost 25 years.

Surprised that someone would give a thing like that to a charity shop, to be honest.

Could be from the estate of a deceased person ?
Family having a clear out, having either
a) no knowledge of it's value
b) can't be bothered to assess values, just want a quick clear out
c) had a desire to help that particular charity
d) there is no d) (copyright Andrew I )

Surprised that someone would give a thing like that to a charity shop, to be honest. It's an antiquated valve design with an antiquated sound (from memory). No real use in a modern high resolution system, but the ARC name gives it cachet and the added midrange processing is certainly very 'nice' to listen to. Seriously, an original Croft Micro in RS Components box would eat it alive sonically I think, even if it doesn't look as tasty.

I've always fancied trying an SP6 or SP8 and I've been watching this one. I love the looks and feel of ARC preamps but the ones I've had so far have been sonically and musically unexceptional, I've had LS1, LS2 and LS3. None of these were particularly well rated so I've kept an open mind.

I was wondering how long t would take you to pipe up with something like that. As for the comparison between it and the old tin box Croft....hmmm. Well, I owned one a long time ago and I've never felt the urge to get another. However, I've used the SP8 for 25 years......

Exactly what it says, it's a compressor (to compress or limit the dynamic range) for studio use. Unless you want to make your music sound like an iPhone, you don't want one anywhere near your hi-fi system.
