Just to be clear, I'm not recommending the 'stylus moves neither in nor out when playing a blank disc' method. I would set it up so that the stylus moves slowly in (about 1.5 to 2 seconds) when playing a blank disk - then tune by ear.

The problem with using a test tone is that it doesn't reflect the dynamic nature of playing a real record. I would recommend initial setup as in the first post and then fine tune by ear.
There are those that believe that zero bias adjustment is preferential (I don't share this view myself).

Spell checkers do want to change Cranage to carnage (mine tried to just now) . I'll be going on Sunday (on my own most likely) - probably wearing a black T shirt with 'Sons of Analogue' design on it.

Andre, can the last one be 'the last straw' if you are writing the above on this one - the last but one straw - the penultimate straw?

As for women on hi-fi forums I can think of three (one of which doesn't post any more) - woman just aren't interested in hi-fi forums (can't blame them). It's not that they don't appreciate music or enjoy it reproduced well, it's just that they don't want to chat about endless audio trivia on the Internet (they don't know what they are missing ).

Yes, I agree - though that would certainly have an impact beyond just removing surface noise.

Indeed - these artefacts are all well within the audible spectrum and the format would have to be exceedingly lossy to edit them out.

When I have ripped vinyl to digital the noise levels - record noise etc. have remained exactly the same - something would definitely be wrong if they had not (I used a cheap A2D and Audacity).

I've rarely left a forum (once I think) but there are a number I am a member of but rarely post on (some of them I never post on). For me it all depends on the content - if something I find interesting is posted, or a question regarding something I have experience of (hence I rarely post about CD or digital issues) then I may well respond. I can certainly see the existence of cliques is an off putting factor. Fortunately for me (I guess) I am often seen as being 'in' with that clique (though this is rarely the case).

Yeah, I agree and I can really see the fun in that. As a more objective report there are a lot of holes in it though. He says the old crossovers were pretty basic and later in the vid they show them. There aren't any electrolytic caps used in the original though so I don't see how the caps have aged. The biggest difference is in the inductors in that the new ones are large foil types and will have much lower resistance than the originals.

Not sure why he has them set up like that either. He makes a point of saying that the mid tweeter panels are dipoles and therefore produce nuls to the sides - he even says this makes them uncritical of the room - yet at the same time he has them so far from the side walls they are almost next to each other!

Not sure what you are on about Dave? The drivers are all wired in the same phase as the other like drivers. The crossovers are interesting but I can't see why they bothered with a circuit board when hard wiring would have been easier and better. They are far from 'cost no object' too - I built fancier ones for my Yamahas.

Pub with friends on a summer evening - lovely - coming home and listening to some vinyl . Discovering new music - a record that just clicks that you've never heard before. The best thing about the resurgence of vinyl is the amount of new music released on it.

Is this thread now serving any useful purpose? It seems to have turned into an excuse for trolls to drop in purely for the purposes of aiming insult and innuendo against people who are no longer members here. If you are one of the administrators of HFS (I'm taking this from Pinkie's post above) then the irony of your comments could hardly be more pronounced - HFS is a forum whose primary aim seems to be to provide a home for "trolls to drop in purely for the purpose of aiming insult and innuendo"!

RD did manage to get banned from his own forum and then had to set up another - fact is indeed stranger than fiction.
If person B is daft enough to join forum C then they shouldn't be surprised by the chaotic outcome.

There's far too much 'hand wringing' over membership bans as far as I'm concerned; it's only a Hi-Fi forum and not the last bastion of free speech - you aren't denying someone freedom of expression if you ban them from a privately owned and run forum - there are plenty of alternatives. As a last resort they can even set up their own forum and populate it with hate, lies and the pathetic dregs of society - if that's what they want to do....
Edit: talking of the HFS forum - I avoid any unpleasantness by just not reading it (I really don't). Occasionally people will PM or email me to tell me of some mention on said forum (which I rather they did not) but other than lies, hate and self congratulatory snide comments there doesn't seem to be any actual content so, for me, there's nothing worth visiting for.

I think the problem is that some people don't want to agree to differ - they actively seek out confrontation and wish to argue just for the sake of it.
To be honest, I don't really see the point in this thread or what the issue is. If a member of the forum has been warned regarding their behaviour but chooses to disregard that warning then it is inevitable they will be banned. Internet forums such as this are not democracies they are privately owned - those who own/moderate such forums are free to manage them as they wish and they certainly don't have to abide by a book of Internet definitions. If members of said forums don't like the way they are moderated they are free to leave.

I've got an iPhone (6) and an iPad Mini and don't have any problem accessing the forum either via Tapatalk or Safari - not tried it in France though.

That's really why I asked which definition of best was being used. have you made a comparison of both to make that judgement? If so, then fine but if not, how do you know? Which systems did you use for the comparison? I'd certainly like to compare the best analogue has to offer against a top end digital front end. I've tried a reasonably good current analogue front end in my system which was not as good for me as the digital system I use. I've not had a state of the art turntable in my system to compare. I was merely suggesting that the previous post that referred to 'best' meant it in the context of best sounding as opposed to most convenient, greatest choice etc. I'm not sure if you are referring to myself when you ask if one has compared source types but assuming you do then yes, I have directly compared digital and analogue (of all types) many, many times over the years - far too many times to list all the systems and equipment.
