I bought two segs. Got them yesterday.
My son is running his off a mac with optical into croft pre/power the into electric beach frugels.
I initially had it attatched to my tq claymore and spendor sp1s on av duty. Watched a few bits and bobs (no country for old men/dark knight).
Removed it and plumbed into my main system another tq claymore hotroded by Colin Wonfor the man himself. I use 57s with supertweeters. I run my 12v stuff off a car battery.
Initial impressions with less than 12 hours on it are that its excellent.
The tq has a really good usb dac and really good class a headphone section so thats my benchmark.
Tried the cans this morning senn 700s.
Reckon the seg is playing in the same league.
My son had a mate round last night-same take as me, the seg is something special.
Will endevour to provide Stan with some liquid pay back.
Im delighted so is my son.
Again, im a long standing customer of stan no connections to the man but count him as a good friend as he helped me years ago set up a battery rig sending me connections and advice free of charge.
Very fine dac-great value for money-great head phone section for cans users.
Thanks Stan.

I use spendor sp1s-the sound you are looking for is what they produce. About £600 would get you a lovely pair and if possible with the castor stands. My wife adores them for the sound they make and has banned me from selling them.
I haven't heard new spendors or harbeths but both would be right up my street.

I have a usb dac built into my amp, I run a long usb cable to the lap top on my lap. I was wondering if the sound quality would be similar using a pi3 via wi fi utilising the lap top as a big remote control?
The software side of things really frightens me but this thread has really gave me hope.
I would be nice to get rid of the usb snake running across the floor.
I have spotify premium but would like to play all my lossless files that I have on i tunes.....
I have a new cheapo acer lap top and wondered if ripping everything from scratch with something like db power amp but be the way to go ans stick it all on a ssd hard drive?
Can anyone help clarify- Im happy with the sound I have just now but would love to lose the long cables without losing sound quality.

Brian popped across the other day with his mounted in small wooden boxes. We tried them on the 57s just by blu taking them to the sides on the inside. I felt the sound stage contacted but was laser sharp.
We then put them on top firing up at maybe 15-20 degrees. Again just blu tacked in place. I was really taken aback by what they do to the sound.
The treble is smoother, midrange with female vocals is gorgeous and dont even attempt to ask me why but the bass is cleaner and more refined.
I dug out the velcro and the boxes have remained on top firing slightly upwards towards the sweet spot of my listening position.
Brian kindly wired them into my speaker cables and let me keep them for less than it cost him to build them. Im delighted and have been listening to them at every opportunity.
A really cost effective improvement.
Im going to invest in another pair and follow Steves advice regards the Frugels and place them at the rear firing vertically.
Well worth a try IMHO.

bought DOSM a couple of months ago on CD....never owned it. Bought the the wall on cd 86/87 pre noise war,all my floyd was. DOSM sounded soft but got me thinking. Bought wish you were here and the wall at sainsbury the other week- sound warmer than my origional disks but mighty fine.
Animals is my favourite floyd disk may well indulge-dogs....fits well with life in general now!

Ive been using a big car battery for a few years, fed by a big camper van solar panel. It can power a dac/t amp mono blocks/hpa quite happily in the summer but needs an occasional charge in the winter.
Ive been on the mains for a while, but at the weekend plumbed in a mini t and BM2-I had forgotten just how quiet battery power is. The BM2 as HPA/DAC is really quite good. My son has my Caiman 2 so I might just treat myself to a SEG.
Battery power is fantastic bang for buck.

The Scottish troops had a get together at Ali Tates place on Sunday a fine meeting it was too with good music/company and food courtesy of Michele .
Im was lucky enough to have taken stewardship of Colin Wonfors TQ Claymore amp over a year ago and haven’t looked back. Fantastic amp with the best Dac ive tried and an excellent phono stage.
I have dappled with TQ cables for years and anything I have bought I have kept, all my blue and black is still in use and like the amp is in keeper territory.
The get together was made a bit special by Colin Wonfor attending with his good lady and bringing some of his latest designs of pre amp/power amp/power cables/speaker cables.
Ali runs a complex digital crossover open baffle speaker set up so invited the troops to bring along conventional speakers so they could get a handle on what the amps and cables did with speakers they knew. Both Alis front ends digital and analogue(didn’t try the reel to reel) are top notch, so a nice opportunity to hear what Colins designs would do.
I took along my Frugel 3s made by Steve of Electric beach. Ive had them for a couple of years-again keepers. They are full range horns with a bit of transmission line assistance designed by Scott Moose. Ive amped them with digital/valve/valve hybrid and solid state so know them reasonably well.
Colin had brought the EWA entry level Q-20P PRE AMP/ Q 20 POWER AMP/HB-100 MONO POWER AMPS. He had brought LS25 cable and power cords.
The Frugels got plumbed in and magic happened….
Initially the Q 20 PRE was in play with the HB-100 mono blocks, EWA wires both speaker and power feeding the amps and speakers.
I know what the Frugels can do..or thought I did!!!
The Monos have an ability to control a conventional driver speaker the likes of which I had not experienced. No harshness, unflustered instant grunt and instantaneous attack. A tremendous delicacy backed by spot you in your tracks dynamics.
Strange phenomenon I have observed with top notch hi fi –its playing really loud(much higher than you would at home) but you can have an unforced conversation with the guy next to you..wierd!
One of the troops commented on how fast the Frugels where-it was the amps. I was seriously impressed but worried one of the troops would be killed with a blunt trauma injury by alpairs driver.
The Q20 power amp was partnered up with its pre and we got listening.
I managed to commandeer Alis digital controller and spooled up some John Martyn/Keb Mo/Jamouriqui.
I couldn’t trip them up, they didnt get flustered no matter how hard they were driven. We checked-they didn’t get warm either.
Sonically, they just amplified music-no colouration I could detect with a naturalness that genuinely raised the hairs on my arms a couple of times.
The cables were invisible in the sonic picture-probably the best compliment I can give them…they added or subtracted nothing,(as it should be)!
The entry level 20 amps partnered with a suitable speaker could quite happily be the center of a music lovers main system for life.
I spoke to Colin…a DAC is on the horizon.
Judging by what I and others heard EWA could provide a fully synergised system only needing a pair of speakers that suit your domestic and sonic needs.
My observations are from my experience with the frugal, other speakers and owners were present and may comment on their interpretation.

Had a great day, as always Ali and Michelle are great hosts and kept us fed and watered-the home made curries were fantastic. Great meeting Chris and Mike in the flesh it good to meet similar folk passionate about music and hi fi.
As mentioned Colin and his good lady had kindly brought some of his EWA amps and cables to let us get a listen. I brought frugels and know how they sound with a variety of amps and cables-boy oh boy does Colins creations get something special out of them.
Had a great afternoon, great people/music/hi fi.
I will try a wee post of my impressions of the EWA kit.

My frugels are back in play due to the 57s having a wee melt down-so i know what they sound like. You mentioned the Eddingdales-I bought my 57s from Colin Topps who was kind enough to demo his speakers to me. Ive heard Garys many times and they are something special but hearing them in Colins set up with 300b amps was a revelation-they presented the finest noise I have heard.
Gary partnered them with a 300b amp and again the sound just gelled. He had run them with an amptastic mini 1 and it wasnt too shabby to be honest. They arent fussy placement wise and are really efficient power wise. Colin might be worth a PM to see what he can do for your room/amplification.
Ive never heard bass texture and quality like it before or since....
Alis suggestion of OBs is spot on-they are terrific sounding with all the delicacy of a static and slam of a big box speaker.

My left 57 is making a sci-fi hissing oscillating noise when left on for a couple of hours. My good lady heard it the other night I shut it down, next morning everything peachy.
Came back from work system on for an hour and a half( on the cans but 57s fired up) thought the lap top was shitting itself!!! Noise back.
Aint the amp methinks as the HPA output is fine.
57 folk, tell me its something simple like a cap please.

The USB DAC in my TQ Claymore is by some margin the best I have heard. I dont know what Colin used but is spot on through the cans and speakers. I suspect the power supplies feeding it and all the other sections of the amp make a massive difference.
