Fantastic, Chris. Great diagnosis and resolution of a mysterious fault. Bet you're a happy bunny! Happy is not the right word for it Martin! It really is sounding great - it's being squirted into the LFD phono stage and then into a line level input of the ARC SP8. I've actually just heard some never before noticed detail on the one album that I probably know better than any other. I knew the Zeta/Koetsu Black would be a fantastic match for the G99 and this proves it beyond any doubt. BIG grin!!!!

Well, it's working with one hand tied behind it's back at the moment as the big power supply packed in a short while ago. It still has that soundstage that the G99 can't match though and that's the thing that drew me to the Gyro in the first place. I need to spend some time with them both now that they are better matched in terms of arms and cartridges. Perhaps by swapping the phono stages around - G99 into Bent Audio Mu SUTs and then the SP8's phono stage - I might get some more height and depth. It will be fun to play with the different combinations & I'm in no hurry to get rid of anything!

They will have very different sounds and might suit different music I would imagine the G99 has a bit more punch whilst the Gyro has the better soundstage Try the matt it should help with the soundstage on the G99 and detail on Gyro

Gosh Chris, was it really over two years ago when we met up in a car park in Conwy and the G99/Decca changed hands? Have you abandoned thoughts of using the Decca ffss 'Super' arm with the H4E cartridge?
Whatever, you now have an excellent second record player - looking forward to reading of the comparison between the Goldring and the Gyro both fitted with identical arms and cartridges.

Gosh Chris, was it really over two years ago when we met up in a car park in Conwy and the G99/Decca changed hands? Thinking about it, I reckon it was actually May of 2011 Barry. The Decca combination sounds wonderful and there's nothing like it, but in our rather dusty environment, it just isn't practical. I'm very sure I'll be revisiting the Decca way of doing things again some time, though.

After a few weeks of living with the G99 with the Zeta in its new position, all seems well. Very good, in fact. I've been messing about with different ideas for feet for the thing.
The rack is an HNE design made from thick granite shelves and turned Beech legs I started off just resting it on 3 pieces of 19mm thick slate cut into circles of about 60mm diameter. I used these simply because they were nearby when I got to the rack and the deck weighs a flaming tonne! They were originally cut by me to use as armboards with the last plinth that I made and were still sitting beside the rack. They worked fairly well and I wasn't really motivated to try anything different as I wanted to establish a baseline of performance of the deck to work from.
The next move was to try some aluminium cupped discs, both with and without a compliant insert.
First up was a sandwich - aluminium/hard but slightly compliant filling/aluminium. VERDICT: Too damped and sat upon. Next. 3 x 1 aluminium disc, cupped side up. Better, but a little veiled. 3 x 1 aluminium disc, cupped side down. Much better, but a little muddled and thick.
Tonight's experiments started with a refresher on where I'd come from - it always pays to go back to where you've been before! Back to just slate. Better than any of the aluminium versions, but lacking a little from my ideal. I decided that this should be the basis for further experiments.
I tried adding some feet I've used, on and off, since forever - from my first dabblings in hi-fi supports. I had these made back in the early eighties and they consist of thick steel discs of about 50mm diameter, with holes drilled and tapped into them and speaker top plate spikes screwed in. I put these with the points down onto the slate discs.
VERDICT: Well........I was enjoying the music so much that I never really thought too much about it. That's got to be good!
So, we'll stick with this configuration for a while and see how it works out.
Progress!
Still lots of things to try though - slate coupked with aluminium cupped discs and slate with aluminium cones to go at next, then some extremely dense hardwood, wood with brass cones, aluminium with hardwood cones.....there is quite a list even before you start making up combinations!

I've found with my deck that hard coupling with RDC1s to the ElectricBeach shelf, and decoupling the EB shelf to the system rack with sorbothane pucks, works best. I now have the sprung feet still to try.

I've always had electronics sitting on this HNE table before now, and it behaves differently to the wood/board topped, metal framed ones that I usually use under turntables.

VERDICT: Well........I was enjoying the music so much that I never really thought too much about it. That's got to be good! The key. I thought it was me, then just me and Martin that let the music play on and on Stuff the improvements let me hear the music I don't like fiddling much. When there is a jump in SQ I see it as investment

Images restored on this thread.
I got around to putting screw in RDC cones onto this deck just last week. Nice improvement.

Great work Chris.
It's come a long way since I had it perched on a stool in front of my system.. Glad to hear you are now getting great results from the G99. Well done!
