SpeedySteve.....
Volumio (or similar such as MoodeAudio) will mount a SMB (or NFS) share across the network using SAMBA.... roughly translated... yes it can do Windows file serving and play files from a NAS or PC share
I have always played FLACs stored on a NAS in this way.... However currently, (travelling light in Northern Cyprus) a large USB3 drive hanging off the back of my router is doing a good impersonation of being a NAS and works the same way
As it happened, I experimented with moving to volumio from moode yesterday and was stumped for a few minutes in this area.. a quick google revealed the need for a version option to force the version of samba/SMB in use
Cheers
Sean

Just to check one thing, can Volumio / RPi can see and play my FLAC files stored on the network, as in my networked laptop or PC? I remember you looked for my laptop on the network but can't remember why it could not be found? It can see any network share - you probably didn't have your folder(s) shared in the normal way. MyVolumio sees my NAS drive on the network automagically. No problem with FLAC, that's the format I use for ripping.

Ah yes, SMBv1 is deprecated and no longer supported by most Operating Systems as it is exceedingly vulnerable.

Maybe. I might be seen as one level up from numpty. I survived with help. There may now be more complete packages available.
Support here if you struggle.

Could i buy a pi that outputs via usb, can connect to a ss hard drive filled with flac and be controlled with a android tablet? Yes you could, with the proviso that USB output is not generally as good from the Pi. Those of us getting the absolute best sound quality are using an Allo DigiOne add-on board that supplies S/PDIF co-ax to the DAC. However, the answer is still 'yes'. As for connecting up either a local hard drive or a remote NAS, and controlling it all from any tablet, Volumio running on the Pi fits the bill perfectly. You might also consider the new Pro-Ject streamer which is an all-in-one solution with a Pi and OEM version of Volumio.

The USB bridge is just as good as the DigiOne I heard it a few times and is good

Good to know, John. The built in USBs are not so good.

Clive has both and gives the USB Bridge the edge but not by much

Need some help.
I got an Rpi3 up and running first with Hifiberry etc and after a bit of soldering the Rpi playing I2S out directly into my Najda DAC/DSP/XO.
After one evening of Volumio showing in Spotify's devices connected list no problem, I had no end of problems this evening.. My Chromecast Audio was playing ball and showing / connecting but I just couldn't get Volumio to show.
Connecting to Volumio I could see it saying I was on the network but it would not play anything from my playlist in Volumio. It would not pull in the artwork etc. I was doing things but playing dead.
I rebooted several times, nothing. Shutdown and powered off etc..
Then I tried on an old kindle fire we have. Volumio showed up in Spotify on that! Then also on my Android phone.
Still wouldn't play anything though.
Quiting Spotify on both Volumio was then gone again..
Then I searched for an artist in Volumio and played from that list. All of a sudden it started playing!
Then Volumio became visible and working in Spotify too.
Is this sort of thing 'normal'?
I did power down last night but wouldn't expect things to get so weird because of that..

No, that's not normal. I almost always have Volumio showing as a device without problems. Worst case, reboot Pi, but that's rare.

Yes the USB bridge would probably be you best bet. I heard it a few times and it probably a little bit better than the DigiOne I guess this is an option for me if I can't get RPi -> I2S Najda to work and I really don't want to go SPdif (Digione or Signature)? I could feed USB into WaveIO which gives I2S nicely to Najda.. <iframe width="18.039999999999964" height="3.240000000000009" style="position: absolute; width: 18.039999999999964px; height: 3.240000000000009px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 15px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_3831264" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="18.039999999999964" height="3.240000000000009" style="position: absolute; width: 18.04px; height: 3.24px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 848px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_1234620" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="18.039999999999964" height="3.240000000000009" style="position: absolute; width: 18.04px; height: 3.24px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 15px; top: 102px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_86489556" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="18.039999999999964" height="3.240000000000009" style="position: absolute; width: 18.04px; height: 3.24px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 848px; top: 102px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_31585914" scrolling="no"></iframe> I seems a bit convoluted though. How does the USB bridge connect up? How versatile is it?

Update: I got RPi + Kali reclocker -> I2S -> into Najda working.. Twas the I2S DAC setting in Volumio that enabled it to work. The generic I2S DAC was no good - sound with instruments in the wrong place and balance of to the left. I've not tried that DAC setting on Rpi alone but I will. Kali reclocker is said to do wonderful things with RPi poor clock. It sounds pretty darn good at the moment. I am trying the Martin and Slinger supe up settings to try + shorter I2S wires. My next little project is to get access to my USB drive (FLAC files), which I shall plug into the router and share. Also try files on my laptop shared over the network. Don't know about quality but all least I'll be able to hear those tracks I'm missing on Spotify and compare. I2S is the future

So pleased it worked for you and that you're leading the way with a DIY I2S solution.
Volumio has a rather good auto NAS setup these days, it finds my NAS drive immediately and starts to index it. The replay quality is very good. You can then play with upsampling, too.
Generic I2S setting may require MCLK whereas you need local master with Najda, or vice versa.

What do you use to backup the SD card? Remove and Win32diskimager?

Yes, although I don't backup my SD card as my setup is straightforward and I put the amended config.txt file in at the time of blasting a new image.
EDIT: I believe there's a plug-in or facility to backup the Volumio settings?

Yeah, tried the back up plugin but it gets to 70% and then gives an unspecified error My set up isn't that involved I suppose.. once you know the DAC and NAS setting tricks..

The plugin install error is apparently due to changing the pw to other than default If I try to change it back to the default, it says the password is too simple - oh joy !
