I don't suppose they were serving cucumber sandwiches on the lawn during the interval of a gig like that!

Heh, alas no. The venue was The Underworld in Camden - no lawn, but first class dank.

Texas - Reading Hexagon
Sharleen Spiteri was on great form last night, entertaining the audience with her amusing stories and natural engagement, not to mention her still very much intact voice. The band sound as good as ever, although I could have wished for more guitar from Johnny McElhone, who really is a great player. Oh, and that Hammond organ was wonderful. What is it about Hammonds that so enrich the music?
I was gratified to hear so many tunes from the early albums Southside and Rick's Road, which really were the songs I wanted to hear. I was struck by how this was the largest gap ever between my seeing a band - from 1988 at the Town & Country Club when I first saw them and she was 19 years old, to last night some 26 years later.
A really entertaining evening at a decent and relatively small venue.

A Pink Floyd tribute act this evening with my two sons (first time I saw a tribute act was a couple of years ago, a Led Zep act. I was expecting glorified Karaoke, but was thoroughly enjoyable. Seen another - actually, could be the same - Pink Floyd act and a Queen act since, both really good, though the Queen one did feel a bit like a fancy dress concert as they were obviously dressing up as Mercury, May etc).
Next weekend, Knopfler in Manchester with my brother.
Will try and give good report afterwards.

Just got home from seeing "Off the Wall" ( Their web site) at a local theatre. if anyone likes Pink Floyd, they are well worth seeing. They covered pretty much all the prerequisites. Starting with Shine on you Crazy Diamond, played a number from Division Bell, a few earlier ones from Relics (Arnold Layne, Bike) then a load from Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. Got us all singing to Another Brick in the Wall. For an Encore, they sang Wish You Were Here and finished with Comfortably Numb. Superb! one of the best songs could easily have been one of the worst, except for the quality of the singing by one of the ladies doing backing vocals. She was superb. They sang Great Gig in the Sky from Dark Side of the Moon. In case anyone hasn't heard it (I assume there must be people who haven't), here is a link. She absolutely nailed it.

As promised, I went to the Royal Albert Hall on Thursday to see Eric Clapton… This was easily the best concert I have ever been too, not only was Clapton on top form, but he had a simply incredible backing group playing with him too.
I was rather worried at first because a guy from the 70's (can't remember his name, it'll come to me) was up first as the support group with a great band and they really kicked it.. he was pretty damn fine on the guitar so I was thinking Clapton would have to do something pretty fine to compete with this… I needn't of worried as not only did Clapton compete, he blew the guy away in his first few cords.
Clapton's effortlessness whilst playing the guitar with massively complex rifts is seriously impressive to see and we were one level down from the top of the seating area, so being able to see him from there was a large bonus.
He played a large number of his more popular tracks like 'Pretending' and the classic J.J. Cale hit song 'Cocaine' and some newer tracks, although not sure whether all of them were Clapton's own or covers.
I also really liked the way in which he allowed his band to do solo's which in their own right were very very impressive. The bass guitarist got to sing one song, whilst the organ player got to sing two.
So in conclusion, if you are in anyway a fan of Eric Clapton, try oh so hard to get tickets to see him… it was just excellent.

Just finished seeing a Mark Knopfler at the Arena (was Phones4u, MEN or Nynex, depending on your age) in Manchester. He was superb. A good mix of new and older (ie dire straits) songs. Thoroughly enjoyable. To be honest, I enjoyed the 5, or 6 Straits songs most of all, especially Telegraph Road. Well worth the money.

It is an awesome song. I now need to get hold of his latest albums and give them a listen, though every time I hear him my head says "its good, but its not Dire Straits"
