I have always harked after buying a Merdian CD Player, ever since seeing the 200 and then 500 ranges at various show in Heathrow years ago.
Does anyone have any experience, are they any good? - you can get 200 ranges for around £200-250 and 500 ranges for £300+ and I don't want to spend much more than £300-350 maximum.
I am selling my Naim CD Player as I rarely use it and it's still worth a bob or two, but wouldn't mind the option to still play the odd CD once it has gone, which is why I was thinking about other options.

Hmm I have a bit, but it's probably won't help you much.
Meridian 207: OK but a bit flat and mechanical compared to the best. Good in its day though. Meridian 200/203: (Early 203) Loved it, still not as good as a Naim for me but clear, lyrical and musical. Would happily live with one. 206 DElta Sigma: Stuffy, veiled and unmusical. One of my least favourite players. Got rid in about 2 weeks. 602/606 listened to In my mates system a couple of times. He loved it and it did all the obvious things well but didn't excite. Quite a bit of heft though.
if I had your budget I'd buy a Copland CDA 266 if one comes up. It comfortably beat my CDX and might be the best player I've owned. I read a few reports from trade that it's better than later and more expensive Coplands including the 288. It was beautifully built and a pleasure to use too. My current player was initially disappointing (Opera Consonance CD120) but ive got used to it. I wouldn't back it in a shootout with the Copland though!

Yep, it is available in black, but I'd hoped for a nicer shade and sheen.

The Coplands usually go for £300-350 but black is usually a bit more due to rarity. You could always try with Ebay 14 day return if you can get it cheaper. Not sure aboiut the 500 series as I've never owned or heard them.

That’s not a bad price for the Copland since it was over a grand when new … I notice Emporium are selling the Meridian - I’ve had several dealings with them in the past and they’ve always been pretty good. I do get a bit worried when hi-fi is described as ‘smooth' sounding though - sometimes it’s a euphemism for dull, flat and lacking detail! Not heard it though so it may be great …

I had one of those! Bloody nextel paint was a sod to keep clean. Only meridian ive ever owned If you can find one the inca design katana is the best cd player ive ever had, I loved it. Redundancy forced its sale along with a load of nice kit

I have a 207 and would probably agree with Andrew's comments. I really like the design though.
Prefer my Technics SLP-1200, and a joy to use.

I guess I am not overally bothered what they sound like as I can plumb the CD player into my Naim streamer as it has inputs that can act as a DAC, so having a good transport is a must... not sure whether that would make buying the Copland a waist really, I am also concerned that the screen is very dull as I do sit someway way from it and that could become a tad annoying.

Paul - had you considered one of those Project transports that seem to be well rated at the moment? If you already have a decent DAC they would be worth a look ...

I'd never heard of Meridian until a thread on another forum. As a result I hankered for a 506 24 bit for a while but ended up falling in love with and bagging a Pioneer PD91 instead. Never got to hear a Meridian though.

In hat case, maybe a 200 transport would fit the bill. It will allow you scratch your itch and enjoy the aesthetics and ergonomics of Meridian without spending a fortune. You might even be a 500 or 602 transport at a good price.
