I found when I used my Logitech Squeezebox Touch & Beresford Caiman II combo that it was probably about 20/80, with the Caiman II the 80% and the Squeezbox seriously letting the side down which is why I bought the NDX, and it was quite a big upgrade.
What I must do soon is try the Caiman II on the NDX, only problem is, Naim being Naim, it uses a different type of connection (BNC I think) that I don't have, so I'll need to get a specially made BNC to Phono-RCA cable to try it out.
I strongly suspect that the Beresford DAC will better the internal Naim DAC.

I would normally, but recently my MCRU No. 9 power cable saw off the Naim Powerline without much effort, and considering brand new, (I bought mine second-hand) it was £200 less than the Naim cable that is some impressive feat.
One thing it has shown me again, is that Naim overprice their equipment, which I probably knew before but I was still in the hypnotic Naim bubble at that point, which I am not now.

At the very least you should hang a SBooster filter off the supplied PSU, as that will kill a lot of the high frequency switching noise the PSU generates. A decent linear PSU lifts the performance considerably, and gets around the switching noise issue by not creating any switching noise. Installing EDO (enhanced digital output) on the player also helps, because without EDO all outpus are on - with EDO installed you can turn off the analogue outputs. And last, but not least, a SPDIF cable that conforms to spec helps.

As for the Caiman-II, it also benefits from the mods and latest firmware. Or buy a Caiman SEG.
