RIP Nik. www.theguardian.com/music/2022/nov/13/open-minded-and-truly-eclectic-nik-turner-was-the-spirit-of-hawkwindI guess the question has to be, how on earth did he last so long?! I enjoyed his contributions to Hawkwind immensely and loved also what he did later. I saw Inner City Unit a few times, the first being in small hall in Hastings which didn't even have a stage: they performed on a carpet in the middle of the hall and were happy to chat at the bar before and after! A bit later I try to obtain a copy of their album, but the local record shop (in Maidenhead) struggled to find one. Eventually they got hold of a phone number that they were told should get them to the distributer. It did, a Mr N Turner who had the albums in a box under his dining room table. I still ahve that album. I played Xitintoday only recently and I shall take Space Ritual for a 'spin' tomorrow I think.

I saw Hawkwind in Tunbridge Wells, in '72 The "Magic Muscle" on that flier was, in fact, Magic Michael, a stoner who was all over the Ladbroke Grove scene and got booed offstage quite often. Because of fire regulations Hawkwind were not allowed to hand out Joss Sticks as they usually did, that night, so they handed out apples instead. One of the biggest cheers of the night was for the guy who managed to hit Magic's guitar with one, and produce one of the most musical sounds it had so far emanated. Me. I was about two-thirds of the way back and in the quiet, before the show opened I was the guy wearing the afghan (coat, not dog) playing The Red Flag on his blues harp. This was the first gig that Jonathan Smeeton aka " Liquid Len" joined the band's existing lights team - Mike " Molten Mick" Hart & Alan " Astral Al" Day - and set in motion the formation of the Lensmen! The Second time I saw them was at the Lewisham Odeon, the week before Christmas in 1980, but Nik had been sacked (again) a month previously I believe. The main body of that show centred on the " Levitation" album, but they closed the night with the triptych of Brainstorm, Silver Machine, and Master of the Universe. Boith Brainstorm and Master... were Nik Turner co-writes. Ginger Baker was on drums that night too. I'm not at liberty to explain what made that gig particularly memorable. Let's just say that the constant throbbing bass appeared to affect my girlfriend in ways I hadn't previously considered.

I saw Hawkwind later, in '77 or '78. My girlfriend at the time didn't come - perhaps she should have?

I only saw Hawkwind twice: once on Hastings pier in '77 and again in '78 (but billed as Hawklords I think) at Hammersmith Odeon. In '77 they were supported by Motörhead, with Lemmy playing both sets. I have a vague recollection that the second support at that concert was Captain Sensible with Nik Turner being involved somehow.

Rick Beato made a lovely homage to Mimi Parker and Low.
